Project ASSIST Tutor Descriptions
Academic Tutor
Academic tutors assist students in identify his/her "academic" learning styles and/or modes of learning, develop appropriate strategies and identify resources to meet these needs rather than just reinforcements of the course materials. The tutor will assist and guide the student in processing his or her homework on a scheduled. The tutor will review the student's academic progress on a regular basis. They will problem solve with the student to make adjustments when concepts or processes are confusing or a new learning technique or skills needs to be implemented.
Organizational Tutor
Organizational tutors address time management in managing reading and assignment completion, along with time available for social activities, watching television and/or joining an organization, time on facebook and the internet. Organizational Tutors also work with students on communication skills as it can sometimes be a struggle for students to self-advocate by talking with professors, resident assistants and roommates, all of which impact the academic life of the student.Writing Tutors
Writing tutors can assist students with any stage of the writing process, from getting started on an assignment to the final stages of revision. They can help students with grammar, but they will not make changes on paper, nor will they edit or fix a paper.
Math Tutors
Math tutors are more specific in nature do to the material that is being covered e.g. algebra, calculus, statistics, etc. Specific tutors are required to competently cover the material in an appropriate and useful manner.
