Parent Resources

Greetings, Parents!

The Dean of Students office has many resources for parents:

Parental Notification & Student Privacy

Where can I find out more information about FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act)?
See our FERPA website.

Will I be notified if my student is hurt or in danger?
FERPA permits disclosure of information from education records when knowledge of that information is necessary to protect the health or safety of the student or other individuals. Families will not generally be notified of routine incidents or health or behavioral issues that do not meet this standard, unless otherwise permitted.

Why do you notify us if our student violates alcohol or drug laws if FERPA doesn't allow you to share any other information?
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater is allowed to share this information based on a FERPA exemption. This allows the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater to inform the family of students who are under the age of 21 only when they have been held responsible for a violation of our university alcohol or drug policies. The Dean of Students or Assistant Director – Community Development in Residence Life will send a letter to the parents of a student found responsible to the home address listed in our records.
