Position: Dean of the College of Arts and Communication

The Dean of the College of Arts and Communication is the executive officer of the College and reports directly to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. The Dean is a member of the Deans Council and the Academic Affairs Staff. The Dean is supported by the Associate Dean, the Director of Public Events, the College Advancement Officer, and classified personnel. The departments of Art, Communication, Music and Theater/Dance and the Young Auditorium Director report to the Dean. Professional accreditations are held by the Departments of Art, Music and Theater/Dance. The College has 83 faculty/staff and over 1100 student majors. The College of Arts and Communication is also home to the Young Auditorium, an exceptional facility and major presenter of cultural entertainment in the performing arts for the region.

The Dean of Arts & Communication is responsible for:

  • Articulating strategic vision and managing strategic planning processes in the College.
  • Ensuring and enhancing the quality of undergraduate and graduate education in the College.
  • Planning, developing, coordinating and evaluating academic programs in ways that ensure academic quality.
  • Overseeing the recruitment, appointment, review and professional development of faculty and academic staff in the college.
  • Providing innovative leadership in the arts to the community, on the campus, in southeastern Wisconsin, in the State of Wisconsin and nationally.
  • Promoting outreach and entrepreneurship in the College so as to connect the College more closely to the region and to provide supplemental funding within the College.
  • Identifying, attracting and strategically managing financial resources for the college.
  • Representing the College and the University to the community, university system, region and beyond.
  • Cultivating and maintaining relationships with the alumni and friends of the College in order to increase our presence in the community and to increase gifts to the College and University.
  • Working collaboratively within the University to ensure the success of College programs.
  • Providing internal leadership and mentorship to departmental chairs.

Qualified candidates will possess:

  • An earned terminal degree in a discipline relative to the position from a regionally accredited institution.
  • A distinguished record of accomplishment in the areas of teaching, research, and service that would merit appointment as a tenured faculty member in one of the departments in the College.
  • A record of progressively more responsible administrative experience.
  • A record of commitment to program growth and program quality.
  • Demonstrated commitment to cultural diversity.
  • Evidence of strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in budget management.
