The College of Arts and Communication seeks an Assistant Professor of Musicology.
The Music Department in the College of Arts and Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the area of Musicology beginning August 2018. This is a full-time position with responsibilities for teaching undergraduate courses in Music History, research, and service to the university and community. Research expertise should complement existing faculty expertise.
The successful candidate will be able to teach undergraduate music history and other musicology related courses depending on the needs of the department and the candidate’s expertise. The candidate will also be expected to pursue an active research agenda that engages undergraduate students, results in publications and contributes to advancing the department, university, the profession, and society. The candidate will also be expected to participate in service activities and embrace the principles of diversity and inclusion as a member of the university community.
Ph.D. in Musicology is required. ABD candidates may apply but must have their degree completed by the contract start date in August 2018; if not, they will be hired on a one-year contract with the understanding that their degree will be completed before January 2019 in advance of their first scheduled review. Demonstrated excellence in teaching with an emphasis on promoting the success of undergraduate students, clear evidence of scholarly potential, commitment to working with diverse populations and serving as active member of the university community. Salary is commensurate with academic preparation and experience.
Full-Time teaching responsibilities include teaching Music History courses and other musicology related courses depending on the needs of the department and the candidate’s expertise. Additional courses may include Women in Music, Survey of African American Music, or Survey of Latin American Music. Research expectations include maintaining a record of scholarly productivity that contributes to the development of national and/or international visibility. In addition, faculty members serve as advisors/mentors to students and are encouraged to engage students in undergraduate research or other scholarly and creative activities. Service responsibilities include committee service at the departmental, college, and university levels as well as participation in community organizations as relevant to the candidate’s expertise and interest. Faculty at UW-W may be required to teach online and/or in a hybrid format, or courses in the evenings. Faculty may also elect to teach New Student Seminar or University Learning Communities, or participate in other programs geared toward improving to student success.
The Music Department, with over 160 music majors, 75 minors, and 32 full- or part-time faculty, is a division of the College of Arts and Communication, and is fully accredited by NASM. The Department offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees with emphases in Music Education, Performance, and Theory/Composition.
