ATTENTION:

The Office of Institutional Research and Planning is seeking a full-time Associate Institutional Planner (Data Analyst).

JOB DETAILS:

The Office of Institutional Research and Planning (IRP) at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater is responsible for the development and maintenance of data resources to support the strategic planning and policy-making processes at the university, fulfilling compliance reporting requirements at both the federal and state levels, facilitating the dissemination of data in a timely and accurate manner, and promoting institutional effectiveness through the development and use of self-assessment and benchmarking tools. Three teams comprise the activities of the IRP office: business intelligence and data management, research and policy, and data, analysis, and accountability.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Working in the data, analysis, and accountability focus area , the Institutional Planner will manage external data reporting requirements (e.g., IPEDS, Common Data Set, US News and World Report), coordination and completion of data requests from UW System and internal constituents, provide accurate and official data for administrative needs and mandated requirements (internal publications, accountability requirements, benchmarking, strategic planning), and produce reports and visualizations that provide comparison data and data for decision making to stakeholders.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree required in an appropriate area of specialization (e.g., computer information systems, statistical analysis, or psychology is preferred), with emphasis or understanding of data and information management from one or more of the following areas: computer science, data science/analytics, social science, mathematics or statistics, or closely related field.
  • Experience working in an institutional research setting, or at least five years of combined experience in similar functions within a higher education setting.
  • Experience with the completion of external reporting/compliance requirements that are standard for an institutional research office.
  • Familiarity with writing queries to manage data and/or extract data (PeopleSoft preferred).
  • Experience with business intelligence software/data visualization software (Tableau preferred).
  • Experience with programs utilized by institutional research offices including Excel, SPSS (or similar), online survey software (Qualtrics preferred), and analytics.
  • Experience handling and protecting confidential or sensitive data.
  • Proven track record of operating independently while remaining aligned with departmental goals.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple assignments requiring various data sources.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Three or more years working in an institutional research setting with experience in the focus areas described as responsibilities for the position.
  • Knowledge of higher education data elements and their utilization.
  • Experience routinely accessing and querying enterprise data using effective tools or applications.
  • Demonstrated experience with relational databases, including developing and maintaining simple and complex queries and troubleshooting and managing data.
  • Experience with basic database programming skills including SQL and JavaScript is helpful for efficient querying.
  • Understanding of database concepts such as schemas, tables, and views as well as experience in reading, developing, and documenting processes from SQL queries.
  • Experience working in a team environment serving an end-user community, particularly with gathering requirements and interpreting end-user needs into technical solutions.
  • Strong analytical approach to understanding and interpreting data.
  • Familiarity with website content management systems.
  • Ability to organize and present complex, technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Manage and fulfill all external data reporting requirements (e.g., IPEDS, Common Data Set, US News and World Report).
  2. Maintain awareness of new and changing national, regional, state, and institutional information and reporting requirements.
  3. Assist with university data submissions to UW System (Central Data Request), including completion of data edits (through a common interface) and data verification.
  4. Assume primary responsibility for the reporting of data in domains including admissions, enrollment, degrees awarded, and faculty/staff.
  5. Develop queries from multiple databases to extract data.
  6. Merge data sets from disparate sources to produce meaningful analyses.
  7. Create and maintain data visualizations to aid in the understanding of data.
  8. Assist with monitoring data sources and address issues, and provide recommendations for enhancements.
  9. Assist with requests and initiatives from UW System, including data analysis, peer comparisons, and benchmark reporting.
  10. Communicate with technical developers, data custodians and functional offices to address business process or data integrity needs.
  11. Develop and maintain a broad understanding of the research and reporting needs of the institution.
  12. Manage multiple requests/projects simultaneously and ensure deadlines are met.
  13. Work both independently and collaboratively as a member of a high-functioning team.
  14. Must demonstrate strong organizational skills, flexibility, good judgment, teamwork, attention to detail, problem-solving, a sense of humor and initiative.
