ATTENTION:

The Department of Educational Foundations in the College of Education and Professional Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the area of Library Media Sciences beginning August 2019. This is a full-time position with responsibilities for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in library media and instructional technology, research, and service to the university and community. Research expertise should complement existing faculty expertise and may include information access and virtual libraries, educational technology, cataloging, or school library administration.

JOB DETAILS:

The successful candidate will be able to teach school library and instructional technology courses, including technology for teachers, cataloging, reference and virtual libraries, administration, information literacy, leadership and others at both the undergraduate and graduate levels as part of the library media and instructional technology program in both face-to-face and online formats. The candidate will also be expected to pursue an active research agenda that engages undergraduate and graduate students, results in publications and contributes to advancing the department, university, the profession, and society. The candidate will also be expected to participate in service activities and embrace the principles of diversity and inclusion as a member of the university community.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or other terminal degree in Library and Information Science, Educational Technology or a relevant field
  • MLS degree, other library degree or relevant coursework in library field is required. (ABD candidates may apply but must have their degree completed by the contract start date in August 2019; if not, they will be hired on a one-year contract with the understanding that their degree will be completed before January 2020 in advance of their first scheduled review).

  • Three years school library experience highly desirable
  • Experience in K-12 education desired
  • Comfortable working in, and helping develop, a highly collaborative and continually evolving educational environment
  • Evidence of curricular leadership
  • Visionary, innovative, creative and intellectually curious
  • Willing and able to use new instructional delivery systems through online learning environments; knowledge of current and emerging technologies and the ability to utilize them in delivering instruction; and experience with these technologies
  • Higher education teaching experience
  • Experience integrating technology in teaching
  • Experience teaching adults in school settings and in collaborating on 21st century skills instruction with K12 teachers and administrators
  • Grant writing skills
  • Entrepreneurial abilities
  • Interest and/or experiences with gifted education programming a plus.
  • Demonstrated excellence in, or commitment to teaching with an emphasis on promoting the success of undergraduate and graduate students, clear evidence of scholarly potential, commitment to working with diverse populations and serving as active member of the university community. Salary is commensurate with academic preparation and experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Full-time teaching responsibilities include teaching a range of school library and instructional technology courses, including technology for teachers, cataloging, reference, administration, information literacy, and others at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Expertise in organizing information (cataloging) in a library environment is important and expertise in at least one of the following areas required: information sources / virtual libraries, leadership and administration, or

Information literacy and learning technologies. Some of these courses will be in a hybrid format through a collaborative distance education program (UWSSLEC: http://www.uwsslec.org) bringing together faculty from three UW campuses to deliver a program for teachers seeking school library licensure. It is expected the faculty may be asked to teach weekend and evening classes in a variety of modalities as well as a summer course. This position will take a leadership role in this consortium and administer the school library licensure program at UWW.

Other academic expectations include helping re-envision the school library field for the future and continue to develop and expand a program to support the development of 21st century skills in students and teachers; supervising practicum students and student teachers in school libraries; developing collaborative relationships with the schools and with other faculty members and students in the College of Education and Professional Studies; becoming a member of the College’s technology team to support integration of technology into the College and its curriculum; and advising undergraduate minors, post-baccalaureate licensure, and graduate students.

Research expectations include consistent progress in the publication of scholarly articles and/or grant activity. Service responsibilities include committee service at the departmental, college, and university levels as well as participation in community organizations as relevant to the candidate’s expertise and interest.
