ATTENTION:
The Department of Languages and Literatures in the College of Letters and Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Spanish (Assistant Professor) beginning August 2019. This is a full-time position for a dynamic, versatile, and innovative language instructor dedicated to teaching beginning through advanced undergraduate level courses.
JOB DETAILS:
The successful candidate will be able to teach language, phonetics/linguistics, and heritage Spanish courses as part of the undergraduate Spanish program. The candidate will also be expected to pursue an active research agenda that engages undergraduate students, results in publications, and contributes to advancing the department, university, the profession, and society. The candidate will also be expected to participate in service activities and embrace the principles of diversity and inclusion as a member of the university community.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Spanish by August 2019 is required, with a specialization in Linguistics and/or Heritage Spanish
- ABD candidates may apply but must have their degree completed by the contract start date in August 2019; if not, they will be hired on a one-year contract with the understanding that their degree will be completed before January 2020 in advance of their first scheduled review
- Demonstrated commitment to teaching with an emphasis on promoting the success of undergraduate students
- Clear evidence of scholarly potential
- Commitment to working with diverse populations and serving as an active member of the university community. Salary is commensurate with academic preparation and experience
- Ability to teach a wide range of courses in Spanish is highly desirable; native or near-native proficiency in Spanish is expected
- Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
- Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations, including necessary training and drills
Full-time teaching responsibilities include a 24-hour course load each year (3-4 classes per semester). Research expectations include publications and/or conference presentations. In addition, faculty members serve as advisors/mentors to students and are encouraged to engage students in undergraduate research or other scholarly and creative activities. Service responsibilities include committee service at the departmental, college, and university levels as well as participation in community organizations as relevant to the candidate’s expertise and interest.

The UW-Whitewater Department of Languages and Literatures is the largest department within the university and College of Letters and Sciences, having over 50 faculty and instructional academic staff members. The Department houses four English program emphases as well as majors and minors in French, German, Spanish, and Japanese Studies; courses in Arabic, Chinese, and Japanese are also offered. The Spanish major is the third largest second major on campus, and the Spanish minor is the largest on campus.
