ATTENTION:

The Department of Occupational & Environmental Safety & Health (OESH) in the College of Business & Economics (CoBE) at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (UWW) is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the area of Environmental/Occupational Safety & Health beginning August 2019. This is a full-time position with responsibilities for teaching undergraduate courses for the Occupational Safety B.S. (distributed, construction safety, and environmental management emphases) and graduate courses for the M.S. in Environmental Safety & Health (online), research, and service to the university and community. Research expertise should complement existing faculty expertise and may include:

Risk management and loss control (commercial and workers comp insurance preferred)
Environmental law, auditing, management systems, and policy
Construction safety and health, Construction management
ISO auditing/management systems and international safety and health

This is a renewable nine-month appointment with summer semester options available. Preference will be given to applicants at the Assistant Professor level, although well-qualified/experienced applicants at higher levels will also be considered.

JOB DETAILS:

The successful candidate will be able to teach a variety of courses in occupational and environmental safety and health as part of the Bachelor of Science in Occupational Safety and the Master of Science in Environmental Safety & Health. The candidate will also be expected to pursue an active research agenda that engages undergraduate and graduate students, results in publications and presentations, and contributes to advancing the department, university, the profession, and society. The candidate will also be expected to participate in service activities and embrace the principles of diversity and inclusion as a member of the university community.

UWW seeks demonstrated commitment to diversity, both cultural and across learning styles. All faculty at UWW may be required to teach online and hybrid courses, weekend classes, and/or evening classes. They may also be required to serve the university and local community in a variety of modalities, including leading learning communities, mentoring students, and providing development opportunities for colleagues, schools, and community groups.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Successful candidates will have a doctoral degree (PhD, ScD, EdD, JD, etc.) in an environmental safety and health or closely related field, including (but not limited to) the following:
    • Risk management and loss control (commercial and workers comp insurance preferred)
    • Environmental law, auditing, management systems, and policy
    • Construction safety and health, Construction management
    • Engineering
    • Public health or policy
  • ABD candidates may apply but must have their degree completed by the contract start date in August 2019; if not, they will be hired on a one-year contract with the understanding that their degree will be completed before January 2020 in advance of their first scheduled review.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching with an emphasis on promoting the success of undergraduate and graduate students, clear evidence of scholarly potential, commitment to working with diverse populations and serving as active member of the university community. A research record in the area of environmental safety and health, or the ability to develop and carry out a research agenda, is required. Good oral and written communication and interpersonal skills are essential. Candidates with professional experience in OESH and professional certification are desirable (CSP, CIH, ARM, CRM, PE, CHMM, REM, etc.). Salary is commensurate with academic preparation, experience, and certifications.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Full-Time teaching responsibilities may include, not limited to:
  1. Personal and Public Safety
  2. Introduction to OSH
  3. Risk Management and Loss Control (new course)
  4. Safety in the Construction Industry
  5. Construction Safety Management
  6. Fundamentals Environmental Law
  7. Environmental Management
  8. Analysis and Design for Safety in Industrial Operations
Additional teaching responsibilities potentially include:
  1. Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in face-to-face, hybrid, and online formats
  2. Curriculum development and review for improvement and re-accreditation
  3. Internship supervision
Research expectations are for all tenure-track positions to pursue an active research agenda including: applying for grants, collaborating with other faculty or members of the EHS community, and publication of research. In addition, faculty members serve as advisors/mentors to students and are encouraged to engage students in undergraduate research or other scholarly and creative activities. Service responsibilities include committee work at the departmental, college, and university levels as well as participation in community organizations as relevant to the candidate’s expertise and interest. Faculty at UWW may be required to teach online and/or in a hybrid format, or courses in the evenings or on weekends [if applicable]. Faculty may also elect to teach New Student Seminar or University Learning Communities, or participate in other programs geared toward improving to student success.

Coursework covers a wide range of subjects including approaches to accident prevention, environmental protection, ergonomics, fire prevention, and legal aspects among others. In addition, students are provided with a number of practical work site experiences, culminating in a full semester internship with a practicing ESH professional.
