ATTENTION:

The Instructional, Communication, and Information Technology (iCIT) Department seeks a Systems Engineer.

JOB DETAILS:

Under the general supervision and direction from the Network Architect, this position is responsible for design, installation, support and troubleshooting related to campus Linux and storage services. The occupant of this position is expected to perform advanced IS duties relating to campus Linux and storage services with minimal direction and supervision.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Demonstrated ability to install, configure, manage and maintain Enterprise Linux operating systems (Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Suse Linux Enterprise Server, etc) and related software in a large-scale environment.
2. Demonstrated experience in the enterprise monitoring of Linux systems and storage infrastructure in a complex environment.
3. Demonstrated ability to develop technical standards, policies and procedures.
4. Detailed knowledge and experience with TCP/IP, the internet and internet technologies.
5. Experience with enterprise file, print and application distribution technologies and techniques in a Linux environment.
6. Experience with NetApp storage systems running Data ONTAP in 7-Mode and Cluster Mode
7. Strong knowledge of common Linux application services such as Apache, MySQL, PHP and other web infrastructure services.
8. Strong knowledge and experience using NetApp SnapVault and SnapMirror technologies
9. Knowledge of NetApp SnapManager products
10. Strong knowledge and experience with CIFS, NFSv3, NFSv4, FCoE, and Fibre Channel NetApp connectivity methods.
11. Ability to use NetApp CLI to gather and analyze system and performance data
12. Knowledge and ability to automate data collection, interpretation and routine system and network administration tasks. This requires a working knowledge of the Unix/Linux operating systems and their facets such as shell and PERL scripting as well as systems logging and security.
13. Knowledge and ability to create web-based applications to enable reporting and delegation of administrative functions.
14. Knowledge of system package management tools (YaST, RPM) and automated deployment facilities such as AutoYaST or Kickstart.
15. Knowledge of mass deployment and configuration management concepts in a Linux environment, including unattended deployment frameworks such as Puppet or Cfengine.

Highly Desired Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Information Technology or related area, or equivalent work experience.
2. Minimum 4 years of experience in a senior technologist role supporting enterprise Linux deployments in a large, complex environment.
3. Minimum of 3 years of experience providing file, print, web application and directory services in a Linux environment.
4. Minimum of 2 years of experience managing enterprise storage systems
5. Minimum of 1 year of experience designing scripts, tools, applications or automated deployment facilities to automate and/or delegate routine tasks.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

A. 60% Linux Server Support
A1. Following departmental and team standards and guidelines, install, maintain, manage and support campus Linux server infrastructure and related functions such as campus file services, print services, Linux web hosting and related services (Apache, MySQL, PHP, etc) running on the Linux platform.
A2. Assist in consultation with customers, planning, research, testing, design and implementation of new systems and services requiring Linux OS and software resources.
A3. Develop detailed implementation plans for the installation of servers, system software and utilities, technical infrastructure and multi-user applications.
A4. Participate in the design and development of tests and testing procedures, prepare documentation on test criteria and execute according to plans and document results. Tests are to: establish proof of concept, functionality, and test against negative impacts of introducing new systems and technology into existing infrastructure.
A5. Monitor performance of systems and services and insure efficient operation and high availability. Write scripts to collect and interpret data as necessary.
A6. Prepare and maintain detailed documentation on systems and services including spreadsheets, Visio diagrams and text documents.
A7. Actively monitor publications and reports from system vendors and advisory services. Respond to alerts and notifications by applying fixes and patches in a timely manner to maintain the integrity of the systems and protect systems and services from security threats.
A8. Assist in the specification, acquisition, configuration, installation, monitoring and management of Linux-based security features such as host-based firewalling, intrusion detection and other security-related systems.
A9. Develop scripts and utilities to automate routine processes in support of administering the campus Linux environments. Research automated deployment tools and toolkits and utilize where possible.
A10. Develop web (and other) applications to enable iCIT and other staff members to review data and accomplish routine tasks without requiring excessive access to systems in question.
A11. Periodically, perform duties during off-hours and on weekends to minimize impact on customers.

B. 30% - Storage Infrastructure Support
B1. Assist Network Architect in allocating, provisioning and managing enterprise storage allocations to applications and services.
B2. Work to integrate existing systems into organizational directions for enterprise storage.
B3. Work with system administrators and application owners to support and troubleshoot enterprise storage issues.
B4. Maintain documentation relating to enterprise storage environment.
B5. Consult with server administrators and other customers to ensure that storage systems meet customer demands while making most efficient use of resources.
B6. Define processes and practices and develop technical facilities for monitoring storage environment to ensure adequate performance and effective use of resources. Provide recommendations and proposals to management for way to enhance services or improve efficiencies.
B7. Provide long-term projections, plans and proposals for growth and management of enterprise storage and enterprise data.
B8. Develop scripts and utilities to automate routine storage provisioning, management and reporting tasks. Research and utilize automated deployment tools and toolkits where possible.
B9. Develop methods to enable other staff members to review data and accomplish routine tasks without requiring excessive access to systems in question.
B10. Assist in the development and implementation of campus disaster recovery and business continuity plans.

C. 10% - Miscellaneous Duties
C1. Assist management with the preparation of an annual personal and professional development plan.
C2. Participate in personal and professional development activities identified to enhance job skills.
C3. Stay abreast of the changing technologies by reading professional journals, attending workshops/seminars as well as learning from peers and colleagues both internal and external to the university.
C4. Will be an active participant in the following of safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills.
C5. Other duties as assigned by management.
