ATTENTION:

The First Year Experience department seeks a Coordinator of Academic Initiatives.

JOB DETAILS:


The Coordinator of Academic Initiatives manages the Learning Communities program along with the Service Learning and Leadership course. These programs assist in the University’s overall retention efforts, supporting approximately 750 new students with their transition to UW-Whitewater. The Learning Communities program is a living and learning experience. This position is supervised by the Director of First Year Experience.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Qualifications:

  1. An earned master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling, or a related field.
  2. Experience working in a university setting, preferably within first year experience, learning communities, or related functional area.
  3. Experience with recruitment, supervision, and training of students.
  4. Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  5. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  6. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Highly Valued Qualifications:
  1. Experience managing learning communities.
  2. Experience with recruitment, supervision, and training of faculty or staff.
  3. Experience managing a budget.
  4. Experience working with service learning/community based courses.
  5. Experience instructing a new student seminar course.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

60% A. Programmatic Duties and Responsibilities


A1.  Provide all administrative oversight of the Learning Community program.

A2.  Manage a budget of approximately $300,000.

A3. Work collaboratively with the Colleges and divisions such as, University Housing, Academic Advising and Exploration Center, and Registrar’s.

A4. Recruit incoming freshmen for the living learning communities through Premiere Days, Plan-it-Purple, campus visits, mailings, phone calls, and one on one meetings with students and their families.

A5. Develop and articulate the master schedule of all learning community linked courses across all Colleges and with First Year Experience Office.

A6. Promote and expand participation in the Learning Communities. Develop new Learning Communities by working collaboratively with Deans, department chairs, and faculty in the four Colleges to recruit faculty and solicit instructional support.

A7. Work closely with the Assistant Director for Learning Communities, Leadership, and Inclusion in University Housing to facilitate and conduct meetings with Learning Community Coordinators and Complex Directors. In addition, create shared programmatic efforts specific to the Learning Communities themes and outcomes.

A8. Oversee assessment and evaluation of Learning Communities, including student satisfaction, impact on retention, graduation rates, and learning objectives.

A9. Plan and facilitate the Learning Communities Day of Service and other events associated with learning communities.

A10. Support diversity and inclusion efforts within the Learning Communities, including recruitment for identity based communities.

A11. Oversee the Learning Communities website, working collaboratively with technical support.

A12. Manage the Learning Communities during orientation and registration days (e.g., lead registration, organize student schedules, pre-register LC students for classes).

A13. Provide strong organizational skills to lead faculty/staff coordinator meetings, with the ability to design or develop new training strategies when needed.

A14. Serve as the chair for INTRAUNI 124: Service Learning and Leadership course. Recruit instructors, review and accept or decline proposals submitted for the spring experience.

A15. Create, manage, and assess a common syllabus for the Service Learning and Leadership course, working collaboratively with the Community Based Learning office to help build community partnerships for Learning Communities who wish to propose Service Learning Courses for the spring semester.

A16. Assist with the implementation of all First Year Experience programs including Plan-It Purple, Warhawk Send-Off, Club U-Dub Dub, TRANSFERmation, Learning Communities Day of Service, and Family Fest. Provide guidance, assistance and direction to faculty, staff, students, and other guests in attendance.

35% B Supervision


B1. Coordinate the recruitment, selection, on-going training, and evaluation for all faculty and staff Learning Community Coordinators.

B2. Coordinate the recruitment, selection, on-going training, and evaluation for one graduate assistant, and approximately 3 undergraduate summer interns.

B3. Plan and facilitate meetings for Learning Community Coordinators throughout the semester. In addition, meet with Learning Community faculty teaching teams to assist with the development of collaborative assignments or projects across the curriculum.

B4. Work collaboratively with College administrators to hire, train, and supervise a faculty fellow to work with the Learning Communities. Work to determine course release, stipend allocation, and budget for the position.

5% C Miscellaneous


C1. Serve on University committees as appropriate.

C2. Will be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills.

C3. Other duties as assigned.
