ATTENTION:

The Instructional, Communication and Information Technology (iCIT) department seeks a Workstation Software Engineer.

JOB DETAILS:

Reporting to the Director of IT Operations, the position is responsible for workstation software distribution and desktop services support on the UW-Whitewater campus for both Windows and Mac platforms. This includes designing standard desktop images based on campus/departmental needs, packaging, testing, and distributing applications, troubleshooting issues associated with workstation software, and leading university-wide software rollouts such operating systems releases, browser releases, and office productivity software.

This position is responsible for campus technical asset tracking for detailed reporting and reconciliation between technical purchasing, inventory and asset development. The Workstation SE is also responsible for leading the Total Desktop Care Technicians in set up and distribution of equipment. Additionally, this position is responsible for using the Asset Tracking system to maintain inventory and report on inventory.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5 or more years’ experience developing, testing, implementing and maintaining imaging, packaging and deployment solution(s).
  • 5 or more years’ experience managing Microsoft Windows operating systems in a distributed, multi-site corporate environment is required, experience with Mac OS is preferred.
  • 5 or more years’ experience working as a desktop engineer within a large or medium sized company and having experience with Windows Security, including New Technology File System (NTFS), User Rights, Services, and Active Directory objects.
  • 5 years of Software Distribution Experience with an enterprise management tool is required.
  • Experience in asset management, inventory tracking, and the use of asset management system.
Highly Desired Qualifications
  • Four-year degree in a technology related field
  • Strong customer service focus and customer service skills.
  • Knowledge and understanding of ITIL model and best practices
  • Knowledge of formal Change Management, Configuration Management and Release Management
  • Experience in Higher Education.
  • Experience with HP Service Manager
  • Experience with the distribution of Windows and Mac workstations policies and updates.
  • Experience in enterprise-scale maintenance and support of multiple MS Windows desktop OS versions, including software integration, Windows services and utilities such as Group Policy Administration
RESPONSIBILITIES:

40%   A. Workstation Management
  1. Develop and maintain the software images used for campus workstations.
  2. Create standard desktop configurations and automated software packages ensuring that the enterprise desktop systems can be supported and managed using ZENworks and Casper desktop management tools.
  3. Prepare and test software packages for distribution.
  4. Configure and apply workstation polices, group policies, Windows and software updates.
  5. Configure and apply virus/malware protection.
  6. Monitor virus protection statistics and status on a regular basis.
  7. Monitor the distribution of software applications, virus/malware tools, policies, and updates for completeness and effectiveness.
  8. Implement and maintain the comprehensive testing environment that will become the standard for evaluating desktop hardware, operating systems and hosted applications, service packs and patches, security configurations and image deployment.
  9. Schedule and report on the execution of the testing and validation effort as part of a formal release management process.
  10. Collaborate with the Desktop Support Team and the Server Administrators responsible for managing the tools for software distribution, on the documentation and implementation of the process and procedures for the enterprise desktop environment that provides management with an accurate inventory of hardware, applications, operating systems, and respective licensing.
  11. Perform Quality Assurance testing of packages, application configurations, images, and configuration performance using manual and automated testing tools.
  12. Stay abreast of new software releases and formulate plans and strategies for keeping workstation software current.
  13. Assist IT Security Compliance Officer in performing desktop security environment assessments including vulnerability software assessments, sensitive data scans, compliance evaluations, and other desktop security audit and review functions.
  14. Work closely with iCIT training and customer consulting staff to understand how enterprise software packages are used by our customers. Understand capabilities of new software releases to suggest areas of functionality that may be beneficial to campus.
25%   B. Asset Management
  1. Assist in development of documentation and communications relating to the desktop software environment including service descriptions, usage instructions and frequently asked questions.
  2. Responsible for campus technical asset management, ensuring the effectiveness of technical asset inventory processes in order to achieve department and campus Service Level Objectives.
  3. Manage surplus equipment to determine repurpose feasibility.
  4. Identify and manage outdated surplus equipment defined to be taken out of service.
  5. Oversee department surplus sales to include financial reporting.
  6. Maintain technical service catalog items in HP Service Manager.
  7. Responsible for delivery and deployment of new technical equipment.
  8. Maintain controls and documentation for the validation of all set ups and deliveries.
25%   C. Incident & Campus Computing Support
  1. Investigate and resolve problems related to workstation updates.
  2. Investigate and resolve problems related to the distribution of software and virus/malware protection.
  3. Serve as Tier-2 support for all desktop related issues in keeping with the organizations incident and problem management escalation procedures.
  4. Evaluate trends in problem and incident reporting related to the desktop environment in order to spot systemic problems or areas needing improvement.
  5. Assist in development of support procedures for TSC helpdesk and other support staff to empower front-line support.
  6. Develop and maintain documentation on common problems and their resolution for inclusion in internal and external knowledge bases.
10%   D. Professional Skills & Teamwork
  1. Stay abreast of changing technologies through professional journals, workshops, and seminars.
  2. Assist management in the preparation of an annual personal and professional development plan.
  3. Participate in staff meetings and assist in ICIT planning processes.
  4. Participate in ICIT tasks and projects as assigned
