ATTENTION:

The Instructional, Communication, and Information Technology (ICIT) Department seeks a Senior Information Technology Strategic Consultant (Windows Lead System Engineer).

JOB DETAILS:

The Windows Lead System Engineer is responsible for architecting, engineering, supporting and managing all aspects of the UW-Whitewater Windows platform including strategy development and production support. The successful candidate will conduct an assessment of campus strategic needs and formulate technical solutions to meet the needs while taking into consideration technology trends and developments. This position works within the Network Operations Center (NOC) under the NOC manager and is the principal technical authority for the Windows server environments. The primary emphasis of this position is on the University’s enterprise environment including Active Directory, Exchange, ISS and MS SQL environment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience managing enterprise Windows platform, including software, systems, and applications
  • 3-5 years experience with Microsoft products such as Active Directory, Exchange, IIS and SQL.
  • 1-2 years experience as a Team Lead.
  • 3-5 years’ experience with server automation programming and scripting languages such Windows batch, Windows PowerShell, VBScript, and Perl.
Highly Desired Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Math or Engineering.
  • 2+ years of experience working with enterprise infrastructure technologies in a lead technician role.
  • Able to organize or schedule people or tasks, to develop realistic action plans while being sensitive to time constraints and resource availability.
  • Knowledge of best practices, standards and policies in operating and securing physical and virtual Windows servers.
  • Familiarity with LDAP.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop technical standards, policies and procedures.
  • Experience preparing detailed project plans and leading technical teams on complex projects.
  • Experience and skills using systematic approach for troubleshooting, problem solving, and performance tuning hardware and operating systems.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including experience giving technical presentations or training.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Strong knowledge of the Windows server operating system.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment with a strong willingness to participate and help others.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, specify, install, manage, monitor, and maintain enterprise server infrastructure in a Windows environment.
  • Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations, including necessary training and drills.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

40%   A. Windows Team Leadership:
  1. Lead a team of Windows Systems Administrators.
  2. Provide mentoring and guidance.
  3. Assist NOC manager in balancing team workload amongst Windows system administration team
  4. Exercise thought leadership and innovation in providing solutions for technical challenges, as well as in the creation of long-term technical roadmaps for the Windows platform
  5. Drive innovation in all aspects of the Windows platform, improve automation, implement self service capabilities and evolve the core platform
  6. Establish strategy and enterprise class support and engineering model for the Windows platform, including directory services, configuration management and software distribution
  7. Create robust platform automation strategy at an in depth technical level and drive individual team members to realize that strategy
  8. Work with vendor partners and team members to determine support cycles, component roadmaps, and support requirements for Windows systems and technologies.
  9. Recommend and develop technical standards for the UW-Whitewater regarding physical and virtual hardware platforms for the Windows Operating System.
  10. Recommend and develop processes, procedures, and best practices for operating and securing Windows servers to ensure managed environments maintain the highest levels of availability, quality, and performance.
  11. Work with individual server administrators to ensure that processes and practices are understood and followed.
  12. Serve as the technical lead for large implementations and upgrade projects related to Windows services.
  13. Develop detailed implementation plans for the installation of servers, system software, and utilities, technical infrastructure, and multi-user applications.
  14. Lead and/or perform installation, maintenance, management, and support of enterprise Windows server environments
  15. Consult with user departments to determine the best way to meet their technical needs; analyze requirements for new/enhanced server environments; and perform research and development activities related to the selection and installation of complex applications, software and operating system.
  16. Act as escalation manager for highly critical business requests, responsible for driving team members to meet challenging SLAs and for working across teams to achieve a common goal.
  17. Actively participate in production outage incidents, ensuring root-cause analysis is identified and knowledge gained is applied for process improvement.
  18. Schedule and lead regular Windows team meetings to review outage incidents.
  19. Perform research, evaluate vendor proposals and make recommendations on infrastructure improvements to consolidate resources, increase efficiency and position UW-W’s Windows platform for the future.
  20. Design and develop tests and testing procedures, prepare documentation on test criteria, execute according to plans and document results. Tests are to: establish proof of concept, functionality, and test against negative impacts of introducing new systems and technology into existing infrastructure.
  21. Assist in the development and implementation of campus disaster recovery and business continuity plans
  22. Prepare and/or deliver presentations and written documentation on technical plans and services, including management briefings on proposals as well as system documentation and troubleshooting / knowledgebase content for other iCIT staff to use in troubleshooting problems.
  23. Represents UWW interests regarding enterprise Windows services at UW System committees and technical advisory groups.
45%   B. Windows Systems Support
  1. Install, patch, and maintain servers running the Windows operating system
  2. Build, configure, install, and maintain various software packages on Windows systems.
  3. Document and communicate system enhancements or changes utilizing formal change management system.
  4. Use enterprise backup system or other related technologies to back and restore files.
  5. Perform user management tasks such as creating accounts, changing passwords, etc.
  6. Analyze and respond to output from server monitoring systems.
10%   C. Oversee Departmental Systems Management
  1. Oversee evaluation of vendor proposals and customer requests for alignment with University technical standards and directions.
  2. Consult with customers to understand technical requirements and recommend solutions that are consistent with University technical standards and directions.
  3. Assist in planning coordination, implementation, upgrade, and maintenance of server hardware and software relating to departmental systems assigned.
  4. Provide mentoring and guidance to junior staff supporting departmental systems.
5%   D. Personal/Professional Development
  1. Attend external training sessions and industry conferences in topics closely related to assigned projects and responsibilities.
  2. Read professional literature on the same.
  3. Maintain current awareness of trends, methods, and technological advances in the industry and profession, especially as they relate to assigned projects and responsibilities, as well as to obtain technical assistance.
  4. Disseminate information from these activities to others within iCIT.
  5. Will be an active participant in the following of safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills
