ATTENTION:

The University Health & Counseling Services at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. This position will be half time at 50% FTE - 3 days per week during the academic year and 1 day per week during the summer months. Schedule is somewhat flexible and can be discussed when hire is made. This position is benefit eligible.

JOB DETAILS:

The UW-W University Health & Counseling Services (UHCS) provides primary outpatient health care services to the diverse population of UWW students. Clinical staff members share a commitment to high quality medical care.

The Mental Health Nurse Practitioner provides a wide range of mental health care to students with a focus on prevention, patient education and health promotion.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualification(s):

  • Board Certified Psychiatric or Mental Health Nurse Practitioner currently licensed or eligible to be licensed in Wisconsin by the time of hire
Desired Qualification(s):
  • Two years’ experience in psychiatric evaluation and treatment
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Strong critical thinking skills
  • Knowledge of and ability to work effectively with an electronic health record
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with persons of diverse socio-economic, racial, ethnic, international, and LGBTQ+ backgrounds, including knowledge and sensitivity about multicultural issues
  • Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills
  • Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
RESPONSIBILITIES:

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Provides outpatient advanced practice mental health care to students in collaboration with a licensed psychiatrist. Scope of care provided includes primary medical mental health care as well as caring for more complex psychiatric illnesses. Assists in the management of care for students with chronic psychiatric illnesses and disabilities.
  2. Provides mental health care to students by obtaining patient histories, performing physical exams, conducting ongoing risk assessments, and ordering and evaluating diagnostic tests. Develops an appropriate treatment plan, which may include administering, prescribing and/or dispensing medications.
  3. Maintains timely documentation using EMR.
  4. Provides continuity of care to patients and coordinates referrals both on and off campus.
  5. Works collaboratively with physicians, nurse practitioner colleagues, counselors and all UHCS staff.
  6. Maintains current professional licensure and certification in adult CPR.
  7. May participate as a representative of the UHCS on university committees.
  8. Participates as a member of the UHCS response team in the event of a campus emergency.
  9. Additional responsibilities assigned as needed. Some assigned duties may occur after normal working hours or on weekends.
EDUCATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Provides patient education, health education and/or health promotion services with an emphasis on the patient’s culture, lifestyle, stressors, genetics, health risk factors and treatment goals.
  2. Promotes health maintenance, promotion and self-advocacy by individualized teaching and providing information for self-care and behavioral change for each student as appropriate.Identifies and responds to students at risk for serious health conditions.
  3. Participates in the general development of UHCS educational materials.
  4. Has the opportunity to prepare and present campus and community health programming, which may include instruction for class credit.
  5. Keeps current with new developments in clinical care by attending in-service programs, professional conferences, reading professional literature and participating with UHCS staff in numerous settings.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Professional Development:
  1. Each NP is expected to prepare a professional development plan as part of the annual performance evaluation.The plan for the previous year will be reviewed at least once per year.All staff members are expected to actively attend meetings, read unit e-mail notices, and participate in the process of continuous quality improvement.
Community Service:
  1. In addition to assigned community service activities, with prior approval, staff may be involved in a wide variety of University or community activities.
Participation in Evaluation Procedures:
  1. Physician staff members provide collaboration as well as immediate consultation when needed. Within UHCS, the scope of practice of the individual NP will be determined both by the experience of the NP and the scope of practice of the collaborating physician(s).
  2. The Medical Director and Director of Student Health Service provide administrative supervision and yearly evaluations. Staff member will participate in an annual performance review.
Continuous Quality Improvement:
  1. NP staff members participate in quality assurance team (QAT) activities.This team provides peer review feedback to clinical staff.
