ATTENTION:

The Office of the Chancellor at the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater seeks a Government & Community Relations Coordinator (Outreach Program Manager I).

JOB DETAILS:

This full-time position will work with the Chancellor and Chief of Staff to serve as the liaison and colleague for government relations and community outreach functions that supports initiatives for the UW-Whitewater campus. The position will be responsible for the development of strong working relationships with the state legislature, the Wisconsin Congressional delegation, city and regional community leaders, and advocates for UW-Whitewater. This position will assist with the development and execution of key outreach projects, maintain contact with the legislature, develop strong relationships with UW System government outreach staff, and hold a broad understanding of higher education issues, including pending legislation and budgeting implications both in the state and nationally. This position will be responsible for orchestrating meetings for the Chancellor with local, regional and federal legislators. The person in this position must be a strategic thinker who possesses the ability to summarize legislative issues that impact higher education on the state and national level, and other duties as assigned by the Chief of Staff.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, public policy and administration, law, communications or a related field
  • Three years of experience with increased responsibility in a related field
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to communicate and develop relationships with the Wisconsin state legislature
  • Must possess a demonstrated knowledge of state government, major public policy issues, and the biennial budget process. Experience in and knowledge of public higher education is preferred
  • Ability to communicate and develop relationships with Federal lawmakers and agencies
  • Effective and professional written and oral communication skills and the ability to build successful relationships with diverse groups and individuals
  • Ability to research, analyze, and articulate complex educational and legislative issues, as well as the ability to plan effective strategic responses
  • Ability to work on complex projects, handle multiple priorities, and produce communications and external relations strategies in a team environment
  • Ability to understand and work in a dynamic, complex environment and the ability to work quickly, accurately, and independently under tight deadlines
  • Ability to handle confidential and proprietary information with the utmost discretion
  • Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills
  • Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
