Lecturer – Exercise Science

The Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Coaching at the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater invites applications for a nine (9) month full-time academic staff position at the rank of Lecturer in the area of Exercise Science beginning August 22, 2012.

Primary teaching responsibilities involve lectures and laboratory sections for Health Appraisal and Exercise Testing during Fall Semesters, and lectures and laboratory sections for Physiology of Exercise during Spring Semesters.  These are 400-level classes required of undergraduate students in the Physical Education major.  Additional teaching responsibilities may include other classes in exercise science and/or classes in the Physical Education General Studies program.  Teaching responsibilities may include online, hybrid, evening and/or weekend classes.  Experience working with diverse populations and a commitment to work with non-traditional students are essential to this position.

Qualifications: A master’s degree in a field related to exercise science with significant laboratory experiences at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels are required.  Excellent communication, presentation, collaboration and organizational skills are required.  Teaching experience is required and university teaching experience is preferred.  A criminal background check is required for employment.

Department: The Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Coaching offers undergraduate and graduate programs to prepare teachers and coaches in Health, Physical Education and Coaching; and undergraduate and graduate programs to prepare professionals in Health, Human Performance and Recreation.  The Department enrolls more than 460 undergraduate majors in two programs, approximately 360 undergraduate minors in three programs, and approximately 30 graduate students in two programs.  The faculty and academic staff in Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Coaching are dedicated to providing high quality education for students committed to professional careers in health promotion, health education, exercise science, physical education, recreation, leisure studies, coaching education and sport.  The Department is a member of the American Kinesiology Association.

College: The College of Education and Professional Studies has 100 faculty members, 2,200 undergraduate students and 450 graduate students in eight departments, and is one of four colleges at the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater.  The College is committed to the development of professionals who are lifelong learners, creators of knowledge, and leaders of character and integrity.  Responding to evolving technologies and the changing needs of a global society, programs in the College prepare professionals to actively engage in an open democratic society inclusive of diverse populations and to be leaders dedicated to change in their communities.  The teacher preparation programs in the College are among a small number of programs in the state of Wisconsin which have received accreditation from The National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

University and Community: Founded in 1868, the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater is a premier public regional comprehensive university serving more than 11,500 undergraduate and graduate students in 48 undergraduate majors and 12 graduate degree programs.  The University is one of 26 campuses in the University of Wisconsin System.  Whitewater is a city of over 14,000 people near the scenic Kettle Moraine State Forest in southeastern Madison.  The immediate area offers a wide variety of recreation and leisure activities throughout the year.  The campus and community are within convenient driving distance to the metropolitan areas of Madison, Milwaukee and Chicago.
