ACADEMIC STAFF SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETER
Student Services Specialist
Reporting to the Disability Service Coordinator (DHOH and Generalist), the incumbent will provide interpreter services in a post-secondary educational environment
Essential Job Functions Include:
•Interpret and/or transliterate classroom instruction (lecture, discussion, lab) and academically-related requirements beyond the classroom (i.e., meetings with instructors and teaching assistants, review sessions, internships, field experiences). Interpret and /or transliterate co-curricular activities
•Interpret and/or transliterate for job-related accommodations of deaf and hard of hearing University of Wisconsin - Whitewater staff, visitors, and Center for Students with Disabilities sponsored events
•Interpret and/or transliterate for a variety of assignments including but not limited to University departmental requests and campus partners
•Assess language of consumers and settings and determine optimal linguistic equivalence. Using consumer and colleague feedback, assess effectiveness of interpretation and adjust interpretation accordingly
•Consult and maintain regular contact with campus community, specifically faculty and students, to establish rapport and explain interpreting services
•Maintain professional standards as delineated in the National Registry of the Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct, Center for Students with Disabilities and University policies
•Prepare for interpreting assignments through advance preparation of course materials and consultation with resources including faculty and student (i.e., become familiar with course syllabi, course content, technical signs)
•Assist in coordination of interpreter schedules
•Attend CSD staff meetings and maintain network with other staff members to maintain the flow of information critical to quality and consistent service
Secondary Job Duties
•Participate in CSD administrative projects, including committee work and mentoring
•C-Print skills as applicable
•Supervise intern interpreters as applicable
•Provide related office assistance as needed, such as working with contract interpreters, and problem solving
•Develop and maintain resource library of classroom materials
•Participate in departmental and division-wide quality improvement efforts and campus service
•Other duties as assigned
Desired Job Qualifications and Knowledge
•A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited post-secondary institution required; an Associate’s Degree, when combined with relevant certifications and years of experience may be considered
•Current RID Certification, or NAD Certification required
•Eligible for or hold current Wisconsin Sign Language Interpreter State License
•Certificate of completion or equivalent, from an accredited interpreter training program is required, or relevant experience may be considered
•Preference given to an interpreter, who is has proven experience and excels in higher education setting
•Two years or more experience interpreting with Deaf and Hard of Hearing people, preferably in a postsecondary setting
The Academic Staff Interpreter position is 75% -100% time renewable 9 month academic year position with a starting date of November 1, 2013 or as soon as possible. The salary based on experience and skills.
