INTRODUCTION:

The University Center currently has a full time Custodial Supervisor vacancy.

This position reports to Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds in the James R. Connor University Center. The primary responsibility of the Custodial Services Supervisor is to provide leadership in all aspects of custodial operations for the James R. Connor University Center, Esker and Drumlin Dining Halls, and the Moraine Bookstore; maintaining a style that is committed to excellence, service, and the development of staff.

JOB DUTIES:

40% A. Personnel Management:

A1.   Participate in employment interviews and effectively recommend hiring of employees.
A2.   Train and direct employees in the performance of their respective jobs.
A3.   Counsel employees on job performance as necessary.
A4.   Prepare formal performance evaluations, and discuss evaluations with subordinates.
A5.   Prepare position descriptions for subordinates; revise and update as necessary.
A6.   Provide materials, instruction and evaluations under sections A2-A5 to provide for a safe and healthy workplace and work performance which minimizes the risk of injury or illness.
A7.   Keep employee time records; verify and approve bi-weekly time sheets for payroll purposes.
A8.   Monitor sick leave usage; approve vacation and flex time requests.
A9.   Maintain and create records for work related injuries or absences.
A10. Assign and adjust work schedules; including overtime, as needed for effective and efficient cleaning of buildings.
A11. Effectively recommend formal discipline, up to and including discharge, to Building Superintendent.
A12. Observe all applicable provisions of the bargaining contract in performance of supervisory responsibilities.
A13. Settle work related complaints of subordinates; respond to formal grievances at the first step.
A14. Recommend shift and staffing levels to supervisor.

40% B. Custodial Operations: at Esker and Drumlin Dining Halls, James R. Connor University Center, Moraine Bookstore:


B1. Regularly inspect the facilities to identify cleaning needs and to monitor work performance.
B2. Develop and assign cleaning schedules for daily, regular, periodic and seasonal projects.
B3. Prepare housekeeping inspection reports and maintenance work orders on basis of daily tours and inspections.
B4. Plan and oversee room set-ups for meetings, conferences and other objectives.
B5. Ensure proper cleaning of all surfaces, fixtures-furniture including, but not limited to drapes, awning vents, light fixtures, lawns, walks, stairs, windows, partitions, etc.
B6. On a regular basis, inspect dining contractor’s kitchen and make any recommendations as needed.

10% C. Training and Instruction:

C1. Maintain Custodial Procedures Handbook.
C2. Conduct periodic training sessions for custodial and related employees.
C3. Review work with custodial employees on a daily basis for conformity to procedure, quality and quantity.

5% D. Supplies and Equipment:

D1. Write purchase orders and maintain housekeeping credit card records.
D2. Write and follow up on work orders.
D3. Test products and equipment and effectively recommend capital and supply items for purchase.
D4. Maintain inventory for custodial equipment, chemicals, and related items.

5% F. Departmental Meetings and Miscellaneous:

F1. Meet weekly with Building Superintendent.
F2. Attend department staff and training meetings.
F3. Meet weekly with dining services managers.
F4. Other duties as assigned.
F5. Will be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum:

  • Extensive knowledge of the methods, supplies and equipment involved in a comprehensive housekeeping operation. Experience in a variety of environments.
  • Extensive experience in personnel management, utilizing tools of effective supervision, coaching and mentoring.
  • Experience in leadership, developing a cohesive work unit, realizing a vision, creating short and long-term goals and planning/prioritizing projects.
  • Solid understanding of customer service with a demonstrated capability to identify/meet customers’ needs and find creative ways to exceed expectations.
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license, ability to obtain one upon appointment, or an interest in utilizing a bicycle to travel between buildings in all weather conditions.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
Highly Desired:
  • Experience in identifying opportunities for improvement and successfully implementing change.
  • Knowledge in safety considerations and precautions necessary in housekeeping work.
  • Demonstrated aptitudes in computing or an interest to learn.
  • Physical ability to perform sustained rigorous activity as the need arises.
