INTRODUCTION:

The department of University Housing - Facilities at the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater is currently recruiting for a full-time first shift Electrician position. The normal working hours for this position are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. This position may occasionally be asked to work hours in excess of the normal shift and after hour call-ins.

Starting salary is $37.86 to $39.09 per hour depending on leave time selected. The cost of employer-paid benefits, except optional health insurance, has been deducted. This position is in the Building Trades-Crafts Bargaining Unit, Pay Schedule/Range 04/00. A six-month probationary period is required.

JOB DUTIES:

This is an Electrician position located within the department of University Housing - Facilities. Duties include, but are not limited to, installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems for all residential and business buildings included within the University Housing area of campus. Also included are the remodeling of buildings and systems in accordance to specifications, maintaining and repairing electrical facilities to assure code compliance and to assure the safety and comfort of all residents and employees. This work is performed under the general direction of the Assistant Director of University Housing - Facilities.

60%   A. Maintain and repair electrical equipment and systems

  1. Repair as assigned and/or conduct preventative maintenance on assigned electrical systems such as fire alarms, emergency power, high voltage distribution, security, HVAC, fire pumps, water softeners, card access, as well as other fixed and movable equipment.
  2. Repair electrical circuitry, apparatus and equipment as listed in B1, B2, B3, B4, and B5.
30%   B. Remodeling and upgrading of University Housing Facilities
  1. Install electrical circuitry including equipment disconnects, panelboards, circuit breakers, conduit, wire, switches, fuses, receptacles, lighting fixtures, motor starters, etc.
  2. Make electrical connections to heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and other fixed and movable equipment.
  3. Install low-voltage systems such as building automation, alarm, audio-visual, digital controls and card access control.
  4. Install and repair automatic door operators and associated equipment.
  5. Installations to be completed to assure the visual appearance of the areas are maintained.
  6. Remove existing electrical material which is being replaced or no longer needed.
  7. Erect and work from scaffold, and utilize movable lift equipment to perform work at various heights.
10%   C. Documentation and records
  1. Submit / close out daily computer generated work orders.
  2. Order and maintain needed supply inventories and inventory records.
  3. Develop, verify, and maintain up to date records of all facility electrical systems.
  4. Assist Director with design review and monitoring of work done by outside contractors to insure compliance with all building codes, and conformance with the specific needs of the UW-Whitewater campus community.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge and Skills:
  • Must be a current licensed Wisconsin Journeyman electrician.
  • Must possess a valid Wisconsin Driver’s License and qualify for state vehicle operation.
  • Thorough knowledge of all methods, procedures, practices, tools, and instruments used in the electrical trade.
  • Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with the electrical trade including lockout/tagout and arc flash requirements.
  • Thorough knowledge of current electrical building codes.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical diagrams, schematics, and construction plans.
  • Ability to do necessary bending, climbing, and heavy lifting associated with the electrical trade.
  • Ability to maintain a professional and service-oriented relationship with customers and co-workers.
  • Ability to be creative, flexible, self-motivated, and quality oriented.
  • Possess good communication and interpersonal skills and exercise a strong sense of priority and time management.
  • Ability to present a neat, clean appearance at all times.
  • Ability to work in a team environment with other trades and facilities staff.
  • Will be an active participant in the following of safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills.
  • This position may occasionally be asked to work hours in excess of the normal work shift and may be contacted for emergency situations.
