- Resolution of Appreciation for Chancellor Jack Miller (Ahmadi):
Whereas, academic freedom and freedom of speech are integral
to any institution of higher education;
Whereas, academia has been introducing thousands of students
to myriad ideas, preparing them to participate in the decisions of a complicated
society;
Whereas, academia provides opportunity for students to participate
in the debate on society=s crucial political issues by inviting controversial
national figures;
Whereas, Jack Miller, the Chancellor of University of Wisconsin--Whitewater,
resisted intense political pressure and stood by his decision to allow Professor
Ward Churchill to speak as scheduled and, hence, to provide the university’s
students the opportunity to hear and debate Professor Churchill's ideas;
Whereas, Chancellor Miller by his action affirmed the University's
commitment to free speech and academic freedom;
Therefore, be it resolved that the Faculty Senate of the University
of Wisconsin-Whitewater recognizes and appreciates Chancellor Miller’s resolve
and applauds the efforts of the students, staff, faculty, and administrators
who made possible this nationally publicized event.
