August 2012
Dear Members of the UW-Whitewater Faculty and Academic Staff:
Welcome to the 2012-2013 academic year! I hope you had an enjoyable summer, and are planning to attend our State of the University Address at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 27, in the Young Auditorium. Please come early to socialize with colleagues and enjoy a good cup of coffee or tea. I am looking forward to discussing the progress of the university with you and focusing on important issues before us for this upcoming year.
The Fall Faculty and Staff Orientation Schedule lists a number of activities that merit your attention. I especially want to mention "Positive Restlessness: It's In Our DNA" sponsored by The LEARN Center. The workshop—presented by Provost Beverly Kopper—is scheduled to begin with coffee, conversation, and networking on Tuesday, August 28 at 9:30 a.m. (presentation 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon.) in UC 275.
In addition, and of particular interest, is the presentation, "Marco Polo, Moby Dick, and Teaching Critical Thinking: An Applied Approach," by Dona Warren on Tuesday, August 28, 1:00-3:00 p.m. in UC 275.
I also encourage you to review the Technology Open House information from iCIT, scheduled on Monday, August 27 from 2:00-5:00 p.m. in UC 275B, along with various Desire2Learn and Hands-On Training workshops scheduled throughout the week of orientation.
We continue to face both challenges and opportunity. As a campus, we faced several challenges, but came through the year with much to celebrate. Through it all, we have continued to focus on our mission and to provide our students with exceptional learning experiences. I look forward to further enhancements to our students learning, while looking for new opportunities to support faculty and staff.
I look forward to seeing you on Monday, August 27 at the State of the University Address. I also hope you take advantage of the workshops and special events throughout the entire week, as noted above and detailed on the orientation schedule and flyers. It will certainly be worth your while to attend as many events as possible.
Sincerely yours,
Richard J. Telfer
Chancellor
