GRADUATE COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES

April 2, 2015

PRESENT:    Yamin Ahmad (for David Welsch), Paul Ambrose, Jennifer Betters-Bubon (for Jeff Cook), Sang Choi, Corey Davis, Colin De Mers, Sarah Hessenauer , Christina Jones, Kim Knesting-Lund, Aaron Malone, Rick Mason, Carol Normand, Erica Ritchie, Celine Santos, Carol Scovotti, Shannon Stuart, and John Zbikowski.

ABSENT:       *Roxanne DePaul, Praveen Parboteeah, Diane Pertzborn, and Karla Saeger.

GUEST:         Carol Elsen, Seth Meisel, Bob Schramm, and Lois Smith.

The April 2, 2015, meeting was called to order at 2:16 p.m. by Dean John Stone. Carol Scovotti moved, with a second by Sang Choi, to approve the minutes of the March 5, 2015, meeting. Motion carried.

Announcements

A.   A Graduate Faculty meeting will be held in Summers Auditorium on Tuesday, April 21st, 2015, to approve the changes in the Graduate Constitution.  

B.   The Higher Learning Commission site visit is scheduled for October 5-6, 2015. One of the issues to be discussed will be the number of dual-listed courses. A copy of the list of dual-level courses from the last site visit vs. the current list was included with the agenda.

C.   The future us of Graduate Quality/Criteria and Master’s ILOs was discussed.

D.   A list of active dual-level courses from the last HLC visit vs. a list of current dual-level courses was distributed with the agenda. (attached)

Rick Mason moved, with a second by Aaron Malone, to approve the information only items A-D on the agenda. With no questions or concerns, the motion carried.

Next Sang Choi moved, with a second by Paul Ambrose, to approve Information Only items E-G on the agenda. Lois Smith indicated that there were merely catalog clean up items. With no questions or concerns, the motion carried.

E.   Curricular Action: Credit Change from the Department of Management: DBA 800 Seminar in Contemporary Business Issues FROM: Repeatable 1 Unit TO: Repeatable 1-2 Units  

F.   Curricular Action: Credit Change from the Department of Management: DBA 970 Directed Study FROM: 3 Units TO: Repeatable 3 Units 

G.   Curricular Action: Credit Change from the Department of Management: DBA 988 DBA Dissertation FROM: Repeatable 1-3 Units TO: Repeatable 1-6 Units 

Finally, Carol Normand moved, with a second by Carol Scovotti, to approve the curricular action from the Accounting Department. The motion carried.

H.   Curricular Action: Course Deletion from the Department of Accounting: ACCOUNT 725 Profit Planning and Control 

Business Items

Rick Mason moved, with a second by Aaron Malone, to approve the items A-H on the agenda. These items relate to the new emphasis in the MSE-PD degree program, Higher Education Athletic Administration), and the current HELEAD emphasis in the same degree program. With no questions or concerns, the motion carried.

A.   Curricular Action: New Course from the Department of Curriculum and Instruction: HELEAD 702 Organization and Administration of Sport and Recreation  

B.   Curricular Action: New Course from the of Curriculum and Instruction: HELEAD 723 Issues, Perspectives and Directions in Higher Education

D.   Curricular Action: New Course from the Department of Curriculum and Instruction: HELEAD 731 Budget and Financial Management in Athletics and Higher Education 

E.   Curricular Action: New Course from the Department of Curriculum and Instruction: HELEAD 732 Event Management, Marketing and Sponsorship in Athletics 

F.   Curricular Action: New Course from the Department of Curriculum and Instruction: HELEAD 779 Career and Professional Development Strategies 

G.   Curricular Action: New Emphasis from the Department of Curriculum and Instruction: Higher Education Athletic Administration (MSE-Professional Development program

H.   Curricular Action: Change in Emphasis: HELEAD (MSE-Professional Development program

John Zbikowski moved, with a second by Corey Davis, to approve the Master’s Institutional Learning Outcome: Diversity. This is written broadly and generically. (attached)

Considerable discussion followed, but the motion ultimately was approved as presented.

Next, Carol Scovotti moved, with a second by Paul Ambrose, to approve the revision in the composite score required for admission to the MBA and MPA programs. The motion carried.

Based on information received from a recent HLC meeting, John distributed a document for the changes to the Graduate Constitution. Corey Davis moved, with a second by Shannon Stuart, to approve the changes. The motion carried.

Rick Mason moved to adjourn the meeting. Sang Choi seconded the motion. The meeting adjourned at 3:00 p.m.
