School of Graduate Studies Announces Outstanding Thesis Award Winner for 2008

Anne Mancl has been selected as the recipient of the 2008 UW-Whitewater Outstanding Master’s Thesis Award. Her thesis, "Of Crabs and Tall Poppies: An Exploratory Study of Attitudes and Communicative Behaviors toward Women Perceived as Successful,” was selected by a panel of graduate faculty evaluators representing each of the four colleges.

Graduate faculty who served as evaluators for this year’s competition were asked to assess the entrants relative to such issues as the extent would the thesis appear to contribute to the discipline, the quality of the writing and overall expression, the appropriateness of the research design and data collection procedures, the effectiveness and appropriateness of the analysis and interpretation of the data, and finally, the overall creativity of the project. The quality of all entrants this year was noteworthy. In the words of one evaluator, “It was a pleasure to review each of the theses. The literature review for each was very well done and the writing was very impressive. All of the authors should be proud of their work.”

Ms. Mancl’s thesis will be forwarded as UW-Whitewater’s nominee for the Midwestern Association of Graduate School’s (MAGS) Distinguished Master’s Thesis Award. The MAGS competition, which was originally started to “recognize and reward distinguished scholarship and research at the master’s level from across the Midwest,” typically fields approximately 150 master’s level entrants from a variety of disciplines and degree programs at a number of Division I, II, and III institutions. Ms. Mancl will also receive a certificate of recognition from UW-Whitewater and will have her name engraved on a plaque displayed in the School of Graduate Studies.

The UW-Whitewater Outstanding Thesis Award has been given annually since 1990. For a list of previous Outstanding Thesis Award winners, go to: http://www.uww.edu/gradstudies/awards.php
