Equal Opportunities in Education

Title IX of the Higher Education Act States:

"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance..."

Furthermore, a resolution passed by the UW System Board of Regents on April 6, 1973 states in part that System policy "...prohibits participation in, support for, or sanction of activities which discrimination on the basis of sex, when in fact, no exception can be allowed except on the basis of a bona fide physical dichotomy..."

The Board of Regents now further resolves:

  • That the University of Wisconsin System is an equal opportunity educational institution;
  • That all UW System funded or sponsored functions and/or activities shall be generally available to all students without regard to gender;

Consequently, each institution in the UW System is directed to:

  • Review all educational functions and activities for discrimination on the basis of gender;
  • Prescribe corrective actions where gender discrimination is identified;
  • Act affirmatively to eliminate gender stereotypes through leadership in such areas as student support services, public service, instruction/instructional support, and research.
