Leon Pescheret Printmaking Demonstration
Saturday, Oct. 13, 11 a.m.
Crossman Gallery, Greenhill Center of the Arts
Students, faculty and community members have flocked the Crossman Gallery to view the Leon Pescheret exhibit. To the benefit of all those who patronized the exhibit, additional works have been added for public viewing.
Since the exhibit's opening on Sept. 6, the Taft family of Whitewater has contributed three large format colored etchings to the exhibit; the first two etchings are typical outdoor Wisconsin landscapes; and the third etching is an image of a classical antebellum mansion, surrounded by lush oaks and rustic moss.
Several large printing plates will be on display from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. October 13. Michael Flanagan, director of the Crossman Gallery, will explain the processes of producing both etchings and intaglio prints. Intaglio printing is simply etching images onto copper metal plates using an acid base. Pescheret's artistic genius and due diligence popularized the etching of images with multiple colors on one copper plate; it was the norm to add colors singularly on several different plates.
Pescheret was a noted artist, interior designer and printmaker who lived in Whitewater from 1936 to 1967. He made his mark in the Midwest with decorative works for institutions like the University of Wisconsin, University of Michigan and the Library of Congress, among others. Pescheret did not limit himself to the Midwest; world-wide travel and citizenry in the United States, has in large part, influenced his artistry. Pescheret's more notable prints include images of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris and even the Great Smokey Mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina.
Roughly seventy Pescheret prints are shown in the gallery. The printing demonstration is free and open to the public and refreshments will be served as well. There will also be an opportunity for those who own Pescheret prints to share them with visitors on the night of the printing demonstration.
