Common Read 2013
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
This spring the University Honors Program will be hosting its 5th Annual Common Read. This year's book will be The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, the very first fiction book to be chosen for the Common Read event since the event began.
The Hunger Games is the widely popular first book in the Hunger Games Trilogy, and the inspiration behind the 2012 blockbuster film. The book follows main character Katniss Everdeen into her country's yearly "celebration," known as the Hunger Games. Each year two children from each of the 13 districts in the country of Panem must fight to the death in order to return home and provide unlimited food and resources for their families.
The purpose of this year's Common Read is to create a reading experience that enhances the reader's analytical thinking abilities, while incorporating in-depth discussion and analysis of the themes and imagery in the book.
Those who choose to participate in the Common Read are eligible to receive both University and Honors credit. Students may also choose to read and participate without receiving credit. Credit for this course may be applied to a different semester of the student's choosing.
To Earn Credit:
- Read the book
- Participate in the Common Read dinner and discussion on Thursday March 14, 2013 in the UC Ballroom room 275
