Software Licensing

What software is provided for faculty and staff office computers?

The following software is licensed for installation on university-owned computers through campus site licenses.

Included in default installation:

  • Microsoft Office 2003 Professional (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access, Publisher, Outlook)
  • Microsoft Office Standard 2004 for Macintosh (Word, Excel, Powerpoint)

Available upon request:

  • MS FrontPage for Windows
  • SPSS for Windows and Macintosh (only a limited number of licenses for MacOS version)
  • McAfee Antivirus for Windows or Virex for Macintosh
  • Windows XP upgrades
  • Visual Studio: Visual Basic, Visual C++, Visual FoxPro, Visual Inter Dev, and Visual J++

 

Is other software provided at reduced prices?

Software available at greatly discounted prices to university departments through UW System licensing (NOT for purchase by individuals):

  • Adobe products (Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat Professional, etc.
  • Macromedia products (Dreamweaver, Flash, Robodemo, etc.)

If you need to purchase other software products, or if you need to make an individual purchase instead of a departmental purchase, use one of the many software vendors that sell products at educational discounts.

 

How do I get the software?

  • For campus site licensed software, contact the Helpdesk to arrange the software installation for your office computer.
  • New university-owned computers will have MS office and anti-virus software installed before delivery.
  • Adobe and Macromedia products can be purchased by departments at reduced prices through the Wisconsin Integrated Software Catalog:

  • Licenses for the latest version of Macintosh OS X can be purchased through iCIT, to be used on campus-owned systems. Contact the Helpdesk to arrange the purchase and installation.

 

Home use for Faculty and Staff:

To obtain media for home use on personally-owned computers of faculty and staff:

  • MS Office 2003, Front Page, and Office 2004 for Macintosh: CDs are distributed by the Helpdesk for Work-at-Home (WAH)
    • Bring your University ID to the Helpdesk to get a free copy of the WAH media
    • You will need sign a compliance form to agree to licensing requirements
  • McAfee Antivirus
    • CDs for Windows and Mac (Virex) versions are available at the Helpdesk
    • You will need sign a compliance form to agree to Microsoft's licensing requirements
  • SPSS for Windows: check out the media from the Andersen Library Reserve desk
  • Windows XP upgrade: check out the media from the Andersen Library Reserve desk
  • Adobe products: if purchased through WISC, home use is allowed.
  • Macromedia products: WISC licensing does NOT allow home use.

Note: Home use of the site licensed software or WISC software mentioned here is legal as long as current contracts are in effect and you remain a UWW employee. If you should leave university employment, you are required to remove the software from your personally-owned computer.

 

Software for Students

UWW site licensed software is available for student use in the campus general access labs and the departmental student computing labs.

Students may purchase software for personally-owned systems at greatly reduced prices from the Wisconsin Integrated Software Catalog: http://www.wisc.edu/wisc/. From the WISC site, students may purchase either of the MS Office suites, Windows upgrades, products from Adobe and Macromedia, and academic software from a number of other vendors.
