UW-Whitewater Wireless

Wireless Guidelines

UWW Wireless network is a product of collaboration between the University Technology Committee (UTC), campus leadership, and Instructional Communication and Information Technology (iCIT). UTC governs the overall deployment and helps in establishing priorities of campus locations. Campus Leadership sets strategic direction in the use of wireless at UWW. iCIT manages the infrastructure and ensures the integrity, availability, and security of wireless access.

The wireless network is an extension of the wired network. The policies set forth in the UWW Network Use policies apply to the wired network as well as the wireless network. However, since wireless networks frequently have a smaller bandwidth and are susceptible to environmental conditions, additional precautions are necessary. Management is centralized, enabling the adoption of new standards and features such as 802.1x authentication, seamless roaming between access points, and reduction of interference between devices using the same frequency range.

  • All students, faculty and staff must authenticate to a central iCIT managed authentication server before wireless access is granted.
  • A location where a specific computing device will be frequently used or permanently located will be connected to the network via a wired LAN connection. This includes portable and non-portable computing devices. The installation of wireless access cards in desktop computers is discouraged. (See FAQ)
  • To avoid interference, caution should be used with the use and placement of other devices that use radio waves in the 2.4GHz range. This includes 2.4GHz portable phones, cordless headsets, microwave ovens, two-way radios, and devices using Bluetooth technology.
  • To protect the integrity of the wireless network and ensure high availability, all wireless access points will be installed and configured by iCIT personnel. If you would like to request wireless access in a new location, please email your request to wireless@uww.edu.
