Overview

The Learning Technology Center will be conducting a two week summer technology workshop for faculty and teaching staff interested in investigating course redesign strategies to transition from traditional classroom to online delivery – totally online or hybrid/blended mode, to improve on existing online courses, and to explore the effective use of instructional technology for teaching and learning.

Participants will have a chance to review their current courses, apply proven design concepts used in developing for the online mode, collaborate and exchange ideas on the pedagogy of on-line course delivery with colleagues, and explore new possibilities to be applied in their courses.

Who should attend?

All faculty and teaching staff who will be teaching at UW-Whitewater during the academic year 2008-2009 are eligible to attend. The workshop will be limited to 20 participants. Preference will be given to those will be teaching fully online courses or hybrid courses in the 2008-2009 academic year and new to online course preparation but have previous experience in using Desire2Learn, or those who have not attended our Summer Faculty Technology workshops in the past two years. Efforts will be made to accommodate all interested in participating.

Duration of the Workshop and Stipend

The full workshop is designed to be a two week workshop [see session descriptions below]. Participants are highly encouraged to attend the full two week workshop. We will consider attendance of one week, depending on availability of seating.

A stipend of $1000 will be awarded to participants upon completion of the two week workshop, or $500 for completion of the one week workshop. Stipend funding is provided by the colleges.

Application Process

Participants will fill out a short application to determine eligibility. The deadline for submitting applications is Friday, May 2, 2008. Please send application to Lorna Wong via email (wongl@uww.edu) or send printed copy to Andersen L1002. You will be notified of acceptance no later than Friday, May 9, 2008.

Workshop Schedule and Description

The workshop is scheduled for:
First Week: June 16 - June 20, Monday - Friday, 8:30 - 4:00 pm
Second Week: July 14 - July 18, Monday - Friday, 8:30 - 4:00 pm

First Week: June 16 - June 20, Monday - Friday, 8:30 - 4:00 pm

During this week, we will cover the essentials of preparing for a course to be delivered totally online, or in a hybrid/blended mode. Topics will include: course redesign and organization to transition from the traditional classroom to online mode using Backward Design strategy, assessing your course design following the Quality Matters standards, exploring effective use of new D2L v8.3 (upgrade at the end of May) platform, the importance of communication, including an introduction to the social computing tools (wikis, podcasting) to work with net-generation students. Participants will be asked to apply the skills to a course they will be teaching during the 2008-2009 academic year.

Prerequisites: Participants should have a good working knowledge with using Desire2Learn for at least one semester.

Second Week: July 14 - July 18, Monday - Friday, 8:30 - 4:00 pm

This workshop will focus on technology that can enhance your on-line material to complement and go beyond using D2L. We will cover the effective use of media technology -- audio and video, Powerpoint and Adobe PDF, proper handling of digital text and graphics images, easy tools to create interactive learning objects using readily available software. We will continue with the theme of quality matters, and will also consider accessibility and copyright issues. This will be a fun workshop with hands-on exercises on topics that you may have wanted to explore, but did not have time for during the semester. The goal is to empower faculty with the tools and knowledge to take advantage of digital media in creating online courses.

Prerequisites: Participants should have a good working knowledge and experience with using Desire2Learn.
