How to Import Scores into D2L

In order to collect grades (point values) in Turning Point, you must use the participant list retrieved from clickers.uww.edu in your Turning Point session. Refer to the step-by-step guide on Getting a Participant List With Clicker Device ID.

There are several steps to this process, and each of these has directions below. The list of steps are as follows:

Setting Point Values

You can identify specific point values for answers in the range 1 to 10,000. You can assign different point values to different answers (if one answer should be awarded more than another for example).

Answers marked Correct have an effective point value of 100. Answers marked Incorrect or No Value have an effect point value of 0.

How to Set a Point Value for an Answer

  1. When a question slide is selected, the Answer Values Pane will appear on the right-hand side of the screen.
  2. There is an Answer Value drop-down menu for each possible answer.
  3. Select Set Point Value from the drop-down menu.
    Answer Value Drop-Down Menu
  4. A dialogue box asking you to enter a point value will open.
  5. Enter a point value in the space provided and select the OK button. TurningPoint sets the point value for the selected answer.

Once you have assigned points to your items, you will poll your students, and save your session data (tpz file).

IMPORTANT: Make sure you save your session file somewhere accessible to you before attempting to export the data. Refer to the Using Turning Technology in Your Class guide for details.

Exporting Session Data (Using Export Schemes)

You can export the data from a session file into a text file. You can use the text file to import the data into a variety of other applications, specifically, Desire2Learn (D2L).

You need to export the data from the session file in using a predefined scheme for the D2L gradebook. This scheme will need to be loaded into TurningPoint. The export scheme is "D2LExportScheme_9.18.09.tpx". You can download the tpx file inside this ZIP archive. You will need to extract the tpx file from the ZIP archive file before loading the export scheme.

How to Load the Export Scheme

  1. Click on Tools in the main toolbar.
  2. From the drop-down menu, select Session Management.
  3. Click Export Session Data.
    Tools Drop-Down Menu
  4. Click the Next button.
  5. Place a check mark in the Use Export Schemes box.
  6. Click on the folder icon to load an export scheme.
    Select Export Scheme Window
  7. Browse to find the export scheme file you downloaded, and open it.

The scheme may not appear in your list of available schemes right away. If you go back a step and return to this screen, it will appear in the list from that point forward.

How to Export Session Data into a Text File

  1. Click on Tools in the main toolbar.
  2. From the drop-down menu, select Session Management.
  3. Click Export Session Data.
  4. There are a few different options for selecting which session you would like to use.
    1. You may select My Session Files or My Backup Session Files. Usually, you will be using a previous session. Select one of the sessions from the list that appears in the window.
      Select Sessions Dialogue Box
    2. If you've saved your session files somewhere besides the default Session and Backup Session folders, select the Folder icon to browse for your session file.
      Open Session File
  5. Click the Next button once you have selected a session file.
  6. Check the Use Export Schemes box to select a pre-defined export scheme for a gradebook application from the Export Schemes list.
  7. Select gradebook scheme D2L Export Scheme 9.18.2009.tpx.

If you do not see the D2L Export Scheme, you can import the scheme now by selecting the Load an Export Scheme button (shaped like a folder).

Using an export scheme automatically specifies the settings available to you in the next steps to match the format required by the application you are exporting to. You may still choose to modify some settings, to specify a grading scale, for example.
    Select Export Schemes
  8. Select the Next button to continue.
  9. No changes need to be made on this screen since you are using an export scheme. Select Next.
