Why do I see "Plug-in did not initialize properly" when I login?

Problem: When you login to D2L, your computer shows a warning box that says "Plug-in did not initialize properly". Clicking 'OK' may close the box. You may see the box more than once, and after clicking 'OK' your browser may crash. If you use another computer, you may hear a beeping sound when you login. This problem only occurs on the PC with Internet Explorer 6.

Solution: Adjust your sound playback settings

D2L has a messaging system called the Pager. When you receive a message, a sound is played. If QuickTime is configured to play these sounds, you will see this error. D2L can use AIFF files for these sounds.

To keep QuickTime from playing AIFF sounds, do the following:

  1. Click the Start Menu and choose Control Panel, or click 'Settings', then click 'Control Panel'.
  2. If you do not see 'QuickTime' in the Control Panel, click the link labeled 'Switch to Classic View'. Then, double-click the 'QuickTime' icon.
  3. In the QuickTime window, click the 'File Types' tab.
  4. Click the plus (+) sign next to 'Audio'
  5. Uncheck 'AIFF auido'.
  6. Click 'OK' to close this window, then close the Control Panel.

D2L's pager sounds work with Windows Media Player. To configure Windows Media Player 9 or higher to play AIFF files, do the following:

  1. Open Windows Media Player
  2. Press ALT+T on your keyboard to open the Tools menu.
  3. Click 'Options'.
  4. In the 'Options' window, click the 'File Types' tab.
  5. In the 'File Types' list, click the checkbox next to 'AIFF audio'.
  6. Click 'OK' to close this window.
