UWW Wireless LAN Deployment Project

Original Project Timeline

August 3, 2004

UWW will be implementing a campus wide wireless LAN system starting this summer. The first phase of this project will provide 802.11b/g wireless access in common areas around campus. These areas were identified based upon feedback from the Colleges and include areas such as the University Center, Library, and common areas in our instructional buildings. The schedule is as follows:

Phase I

During the month of August we are planning to:

• Finalize the budget,
• Acquire necessary infrastructure equipment, 30 wireless access points and antennas (to be allocated among the Colleges based on the feedback we received from the meetings with all of you last fall),
• Plan out the first phase of deployment (Convenience Phase),
• Prepare a website with information (instructions, locations, standards, etc) on wireless,
• Plan out the deployment of wireless in Residential Halls,
• Provide training to Helpesk Staff,
• Schedule Access Point cabling work and power (as needed) with FP&M, 
• Prepare for customer support (instructions for set up, customer assistance, etc.).

During the month of September we are planning to:

• Install infrastructure equipment (first two weeks),
• Deploy 5-10 wireless access points in "common" areas of one instructional building (second two weeks),

During the month of October we are planning to

• Deploy the rest of the access points (20-25) in "common" areas of other instructional buildings based upon feedback

Phase II

During the timeframe of October 04 – August 05 we are planning to:

• Work with users to identify and correct issues
• Update documentation and instructions
• Plan the deployment of wireless into other areas of the campus
• Obtain budget for new locations
• Acquire and install additional wireless access points
