Junk Email Filtering

Faculty & Staff:

Outlook 2007:

Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 offers junk email filtering. A protection level (default: Low) uses Outlook's built-in filtering rules to move suspected junk messages to the junk email folder. The junk email filter is updated regularly by Microsoft Automatic Updates. Users may change the junk email protection level as well as add addresses and domains to blocked and safe-senders lists. Outlook 2007 also can detect and warn users about phishing messages.

Rules may also be used for additional mail filtering.

Entourage 2004/2008:

Microsoft Office Entourage 2004 and 2008 offer junk email filtering. A protection level (default: Low) uses Entourage's built-in filtering rules to move suspected junk messages to the junk email folder. The junk email filter is updated occasionally by Microsoft AutoUpdate. Users may change the junk email protection level as well as identify safe domains. Entourage 2008 adds the ability to add addresses and domains to the blocked senders list and can detect and warn users about phishing messages.

Rules may also be used for additional mail filtering.

Outlook Web Access (OWA):

Use the Options in Outlook Web Access to set the junk mail filters to identify safe or blocked senders, as well as to create rules to move or delete unwanted messages automatically from the inbox.

Ironport Spam Management

Every day, UW-Whitewater servers receive more than one million emails.  Almost all of them (98%) are spam - unsolicited commercial promotions, fraudulent requests for personal information, or links to Web sites that attempt to infect your computer with viruses.  Every day, UWW email system effectively blocks all messages that unequivocally belong in this category through the use of an anti-spam system called Ironport.

UW-Whitewater faculty and staff may opt in to an additional Ironport quarantine service to help manage emails that fall into a gray area of the definition of spam (in addition to Outlook or Entourage).  The quarantine service allows more control over email and more flexibility over what does and doesn't constitute spam for you.

To learn more or to opt-in for Ironport quarantine service, contact the TSC Help Desk or view the Ironport Quick Start Guide
