Junk Email & Spam Filtering Options
Faculty & Staff:
Outlook 2003/2007:
Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 and 2007 offer Junk Email filtering. There is a protection level (default: Low) that uses Outlook's built-in filtering rules to move suspected spam messages to the Junk Email folder. The Junk Email filter is updated regularly by Microsoft Automatic Updates. You may change the Junk Email protection level as well as add addresses and domains to blocked and safe senders lists. Outlook 2007 also can detect and warn you about phishing messages.
You may also use Rules for additional mail filtering.

Entourage 2004/2008:
Microsoft Office Entourage 2004 and 2008 offer Junk Email filtering. There is a protection level (default: Low) that uses Entourage's built-in filtering rules to move suspected spam messages to the Junk Email folder. The Junk Email filter is updated occasionally by Microsoft AutoUpdate. You may change the Junk Email protection level as well as identify safe domains. Entourage 2008 adds the ability to add addresses and domains to the blocked senders list and can detect and warn you about phishing messages.
You may also use Rules for additional mail filtering.

Outlook Web Access (OWA):
While Outlook and Entourage can filter spam to your Junk Email folder, OWA cannot; however, you can still view the Junk Email folder and the messages it contains. Filtering mail into the Junk Email folder will only occur when using the Outlook or Entourage clients, not while using OWA. The upgrade to Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 (planned for summer 2008) will add Junk Email filtering capabilities to OWA.
Students:
Students use Outlook Web Access (OWA) which currently does not have the ability to filter spam. The upgrade to Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 (planned for summer 2008) will add Junk Email filtering capabilities to OWA.
