• Vista Setup Instructions

These instructions are for connecting to the UWW trial wireless system via an industry standard 802.1x connection on Windows Vista using PEAP. You only have to go through the initial setup once as long as you use the same wireless network card on your computer.

1. Open your Start menu and click on Network.



2. You should now see a screen similar to the screen below. Click "This computer is not connected to a network. Click to connect…”  Select "Connect to a network.” If that is not a choice, choose "Network and Sharing Center” and select Connect to a network from the menu on the left.



3. You should now see a screen like the one below.



Click "Set up a connection or network." You should get see the menu below.



Select "Manually connect to a wireless network.” Click Next.

4. You should now see a screen similar to the one to the below. 
• For the "Network name:” type uww-wifi.  It is case sensitive so you must use all lowercase letters. 
• For "Security type:” choose WPA-Enterprise
• For "Encryption type” choose TKIP.
• The "Security Key/Passphrase” option should become grayed out.
• Ensure "Start this connection automatically” is checked.
• Check “Connect even if the network is not broadcasting”



Click Next and you should see a screen like the one below. Click “Change connection settings.”



5. Adjust the checkboxes as follows:
• Make sure “Connect automatically when this network is in range” is checked.
• Make sure “Connect even if the network is not broadcasting” is checked.
• Uncheck “Connect to a more preferred network if available.”



Click on the Security tab



If you would like it to remember your username and password (recommended), leave the “Cache user information for subsequent connections to this network” checked.

Next to Protected EAP (PEAP), click Settings.

6. On the following screen,
• Uncheck “validate server certificate”
• Ensure that everything else is unchecked except for “Enable Fast Reconnect” located at the bottom of the screen. 
• Finally, ensure that the “Select Authentication Method” is set to “Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)”. 
• Press the configure button.



Uncheck the only option on this screen.



7. Select "OK" on all the screens until they are all closed.
8. Your wireless card is now setup to work. Go into a wireless area on campus and your computer should automatically connect to the system.
9. When your computer detects the wireless network you will see a message that additional information is required to connect to uww-wifi. Click on the message and a login box should appear.



10. Enter your UWW campus username and password in the appropriate blanks. Leave the logon domain field blank. Then click "OK". It may take a moment to connect.



11. You should then be connected to the wireless network.
    If not, you may have entered your username and password incorrectly so try again.
    When you are connected, the network icon in the taskbar should change to show two computers with a globe between them, as shown below.
    When you move the mouse over that icon, you should see the display like the picture below.
