A LITTLE HISTORY: In January 2001Apple introduced free iTunes software that allowed people to manage their music files and transfer music to Apple's then-new music player, iPod. In April 2003 iTunes was expanded by the introduction of iTunes Store which added the capability to purchase songs online. Although iPod revolutionized the way people listen to music, from the educational point of view, the crucial moments in iTunes history came in June 2005 and May 2007, respectively.

First, Apple's 2005 version of iTunes (4.9) added support for podcasts, free, subscriprion-based audio or video tracks. then, in 2007, Apple introduced its iTunes U initiative, offering non-profit educational institutions storage space, bandwidth, and the opportunity to distribute their audio and video content using the by-now-familiar and very popular iTunes Store and software.

Since then, major educational institutions in the US, and worldwide, have made their selected content available through iTunes U, so that now iTunes Store includes, in addition to commercially available music and videos, also thousands of lectures, presentations, and workshops available to anyone for download, free of charge.

THE WORKSHOP: As iTunes software evolved, and became more capable, it also became more complex. This workshop provides a detailed overview of the features and capabilituies of the current version of iTunes, covering the basics (playing music, video, and file management), as well as tips of how to make the most of the valuable, free resource that iTunes U has become. Finally, we also go over UW-Whitewater's own, continually expanding, content available on iTunes U for download.

ACCESS: iTunes & iTunes U workshop is available as a live, hands-on workshop (open to University faculty and staff). The same material is also covered in a series of short videos, available for download (beginning August 27, 2009). The video version is accompanied by a detailed, printable PDF Table of Contents (TOC).
