About the English Language Academy

Mission

The mission of the UW-Whitewater English Language Academy is to support students in meeting their academic, professional and personal goals through meaningful opportunities to learn English as a Second Language inside and outside of the classroom.

Philosophy

The UW-Whitewater English Language Academy instructional philosophy is centered on our belief that language development and human development are intertwined. The UW-Whitewater ELA carries out its mission by implementing Knefelkamp's Developmental Instructional (DI) model.

The DI model outlines four key variables on a continuum to challenge and support students:

  • Structure (framework/direction)
  • Diversity (alternatives/perspectives)
  • Experiential Learning (concrete, direct learning experiences)
  • Personalism (safe learning environments where risk-taking is encouraged)
