Privacy of Student Records

In the U.S., university students decide who can have access to their academic records or to discuss these records with others. Unless a student signs a waiver of rights, nobody, including parents, has the right to receive student records, including transcripts or grades.

University personnel may only access student records if there is a compelling reason to do so. More information on the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act can be found here.
