Exchange Students

Thank you for your interest in attending the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater as an exchange student.  We look forward to welcoming you to Whitewater and the U.S.!

Eligibility

In order to apply to UW-Whitewater as an exchange student for one or two semesters, you must meet the following eligibility requirements.

  • You must be nominated by one of UW-Whitewater's exchange partners to participate in the exchange
  • You must have completed at least one year of university studies before starting the exchange
  • You must be in good academic standing at your home university
  • If English is not your first/main language, you must demonstrate the required level of proficiency in English by meeting one or more of the following requirements:
    • TOEFL score of at least 500 pBT/61 iBT (550 pBT/79 iBT  for graduate students)
    • IELTS score of at least 5.5 (6.0 for graduate students)
    • Successful completion of at least one full year of university coursework (e.g. 60 ECTS) in English
    • Other English proficiency documentation, as per agreement

Application Process

Before applying to UW-Whitewater as an exchange student, you must first successfully complete the selection process at your home university. The international office at your home university will be able to provide you with the necessary details. Once you have been selected, your home university will nominate you.

After you have been nominated, you are ready to complete the UW-Whitewater exchange application process:

  1. Complete the online application at http://apply.wisconsin.edu, following the guidance below:
    • Guidance for undergraduate (bachelor's) exchange students
    • Guidance for graduate (master's) exchange students
  2. Submit the following supplementary documents:
    • Application Supplement Form<
    • Documentation of English Proficiency (if required)
    • Course Selection Form
    • Certification of Finances Form (and accompanying evidence of finances)
    • Academic Transcript
    • Passport Copy
    • Medical Insurance Form (And documentation of your health insurance coverage if you are opting out of UW-Whitewater's health insurance policy)


Supplementary documents may be scanned and emailed to Stephanie Martell (martellm@uww.edu) - we do not require the original documents to be sent in the mail.  However, if you prefer to submit application documents by mail, they may be sent to:

After we have reviewed your application, you will receive an official acceptance letter and DS-2019 (Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status) via your home university international office, along with information about housing and arrival at UW-Whitewater.
