NSE Application Process

Steps to Studying at an NSE Campus

  1. The application timeline generally begins one academic year before a student departs for a NSE host campus.
    • NSE placements are typically only made once per academic year at the national NSE conference every March.
    • If a student is interested in the NSE, it is best to plan ahead to meet these deadlines.
    • For example, if a student wishes to participate in NSE during the Spring semester of an academic year, that student must have applied to participate during the previous Spring placement period.
    • So if a student wants to participate in NSE during Fall 2014 or Spring 2015, that student must have applied during the Spring 2014 NSE placement cycle.
    • Applications for Fall or Spring placement are done at the same time, at the annual placement conference.
  2. Attend a General Study Abroad Information Session, usually held three times a week every week during the school year.
    • While these meetings focus on study abroad, interested students should request a NSE Directory from the office when they attend this session.
  3. Read the NSE Directory (paying particular attention to the beginning pages which describe NSE application, placement, and exchange policies and procedures) and the NSE informational flyer.
  4. Students should select three to five campuses that interest them and then research those choices.
  5. Research exchange options by reviewing campus catalogs, public relations materials, and World Wide Web information (www.nse.org).
  6. Meet with the NSE coordinator and the student’s academic advisor to identify appropriate academic exchange options.
    • A flexible academic plan is a must for exchange participation.
  7. Discuss NSE participation with family, friends, and former exchange participants.
  8. Complete the UWW NSE application, which is available on the UW-W study abroad website. (place weblink to UWW NSE application page here).
  9. Consult with the student’s home campus financial aid office to evaluate the student’s needs for the exchange term(s).
    • Refer to information in the NSE Directory for policies governing federally funded aid application and disbursement.
  10. By February 15, file or update the student’s FAFSA for federally funded financial aid. Only list the student’s home campus on the FAFSA application.
  11. Consult with the NSE coordinator to prioritize campus options for exchange.
  12. Students should turn in a completed NSE application and attend the NSE interview with the NSE coordinator.
  13. The Priority deadline for NSE applications is 2/01 for anytime during the following academic year.
    • Late applications will be accepted until the end of February, although applications received by the Priority deadline will have priority over late applications.
  14. After the late application deadline, interested students should still contact the NSE coordinator to discuss potential post-conference placement options.
    • Occasionally, some NSE campuses will still have student placement space available after the March placements are complete.
    • However, keep in mind that some NSE campuses discourage or do not allow off cycle placements.
