SUMMARY 
This exchange is open to students of all majors. Students can choose from a variety of courses at Jyváskylá, including: Journalism, Public Relations, the Humanities, Business, and Economics (Communication classes in English are only available in the spring semester). The student population of JYU is comparable to UW-W, with 13,000 students from 50 different countries. Students can take advantage of great winter sports, as well as the thriving cosmopolitan environment in Jyváskylá. JYU does an excellent job of meeting students’ needs by offering arrival services, orientation sessions, tutors and access to university libraries.

ELIGIBILITY
Students must:
- have sophomore standing.
- have a 2.75 cumulative GPA at the time of application.
- have a clean disciplinary record.
- be back on the UW-Whitewater campus for at least one final semester prior to graduation.
APPLICATIONS, DATES AND DEADLINES
The application process consists of two steps: an application to UW-W for approval to study abroad followed by an application to the host institution abroad. Applications are available from the Center for Global Education. Early admittance is not possible for this program.
Academic year abroad: early September – late May. UW-W application deadline is March 15.
*Fall semester abroad: early September – early January. UW-W application deadline is March 15.
Spring semester abroad: mid-January - late May. UW-W application deadline is October 15.
*Students studying at JYU for fall semester can take a free 3-week Finnish language class beginning in early August. Room & board cost extra.

Students pay UW-Whitewater tuition while studying abroad through this program. The following is an approximate budget that can be used as a guide. ACCOMMODATIONS
Housing is coordinated through the host institution.
CISI INSURANCE
All students participating in any Wisconsin international education program are required by the State of Wisconsin to purchase international insurance from Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI). CISI insurance costs $37 per 30-day period. CISI insurance charges will be billed to the student’s UW-W online student account.
PASSPORT REQUIREMENTS
Students will need a passport to study in Finland. Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond the end of your program. The passport fee is approximately $100. Obtaining a passport can take two to three months. Passport applications are available in the Center for Global Education.
VISA REQUIREMENTS
Students need a residence permit for study in Finland. An acceptance letter from the University of Jyváskylá is required in order to apply for a residence permit. Applications take 8-12 weeks to process. The cost is approximately $75 plus additional fees for delivery. Students are responsible for obtaining the permit. FINANCIAL AID/SCHOLARSHIPS
Qualified students may apply for a Wisconsin Study Abroad grant (need-based) of up to $2,000. Applications are available from the Center for Global Education. To discuss having your financial aid applied to study abroad schedule an appointment with the Financial Aid Office at 262.472.1130. All students are also encouraged to apply for college-specific scholarships. The Center for Global Education has additional information on grants and scholarships for study abroad.
