Financial Aid For Studying Abroad

Students who are planning to travel abroad as part of their approved academic program may be eligible to recieve additional grants and/or loans to cover the related expenses. To determine if students are eligible they must first apply for financial aid by submitting the current and/or next year's Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Students who have never applied for financial aid are encouraged to apply. The Financial Aid Office cannot award any federal or state funds unless the student has completed the FAFSA process. Students should submit a FAFSA application A.S.A.P., regardless of whether or not they have chosen a program, have been officially admitted to another institution, accepted into a class, and/or approved for a student teaching experience.

Who is eligible for Financial Aid?

  • All UW-Whitewater students enrolled in a 1st undergraduate degree program
  • All UW-Whitewater students enrolled in a graduate program
  • Students who have been enrolled full-time at UW-Whitewater at least one semester preceding the semester they plan to travel.
  • All federal and state aid administered by the Financial Aid Office is awarded based on need.
  • Students enrolled in travel study classes, which include the experience as part of the course requirements/syllabus are automatically eligible.
Are there other types of aid that students should be aware of?
  • State of Wisconsin Grant Applications are only for in-state students who have some FAFSA eligibility. Applications should be picked up and turned the semester before departure.
  • Students should apply for private funds directly. Some scholarships are available that are directly connected to the country of travel.
What should students do to let Financial Aid know they are studying abroad?
  • Students must schedule a meeting with Financial Aid to determine their aid status.
  • Students should bring an official Study Abroad Budget Sheet to this meeting.

This may allow the Financial Aid Office to increase a student's financial aid package by the additional dollar amount needed for the study abroad experience. Although, the amount of financial aid available for study abroad is always limited and is based on their eligibility, financial need or class level.

When will a student recieve their financial aid package?

The type of program a student participates in determines how and when they will receive their financial aid funds. Students who plan to depart early for programs that begin in July, August, or September should plan to pay for transportation, airfare and some living expenses in advance.
