Hawk Internship Program (HIP) - Employers

The UW-Whitewater Hawk Internship Program (HIP), coordinated by Career & Leadership Development, provides career development internship opportunities in the Walworth, Rock, and Jefferson County area for the university’s undergraduate students. The program is open to students from all majors.

All questions regarding the program, involvement process, and requirements can be directed to Laura Jacobs, Internship Coordinator, at MorrowL@uww.edu or (262) 472-1606.

Benefits of Becoming an Employer Partner

Employers involved with the Hawk Internship Program are really partners with the university. The program hopes to work with these partners in order to establish more quality career development experiences for UW-Whitewater students. In doing so, it can help those students make professional contacts in the region, connect with future employment opportunities in the region, and hopefully decide to begin their careers in the region.

There are several benefits to becoming an Employer Partner:

  • You receive specialized assistance from the Career & Leadership Development Internship Coordinator as you develop an internship position for the first time or as you review and retool an existing internship position.
  • The application collection process is managed by the Internship Coordinator*.
  • Your internship opportunity receives special attention and increased promotion with target student audiences.
  • Students hired for program positions are REQUIRED to participate in a Career Development Education program, and they receive additional supervision from the Internship Coordinator.
Students also have the option of seeking academic credit for the internship, if they so choose.

Get Involved in HIP

Getting involved is easy:

  1. Contact Laura Jacobs, Career & Leadership Development Internship Coordinator, at (262) 472-1606 or MorrowL@uww.edu to request a Prospective Employer Partner Packet, which will include information on the program, expectations of Employer Partners, and forms for submitting an internship position for consideration.

  • The internship position is exclusive to the Hawk Internship Program.
  • The internship position’s qualifications focus on the relevant skill sets necessary for the intern to possess in order to successfully complete the work**.
  • The internship position is paid at a rate of approximately $10 an hour. Funding assistance may be available to help employers develop paid positions***.
  • The internship position is structured well and will provide a quality career development experience, as determined by Career & Leadership Development staff.

The approximate duration and work hours for internships in the program are as follows:

  • Summer Internships – Part-time or full time (20-40 hours/week) for approximately 12 weeks.
  • Fall or Spring Internships – Part-time (10-20 hours/week) for approximately 15 weeks.

* While the Internship Coordinator will collect all student applications for the internships, each Employer Partner will be responsible for conducting their own hiring process.

** It is recommended that the internship position not be limited to students in a specific major(s). Please contact the Internship Coordinator if you have a specific need to limit the position’s qualifications by major(s).

*** It is Career & Leadership Development’s intent to help fund employers/internship sites that may not be able to afford hosting an intern, thereby providing our students with more access to internships. Contact the Internship Coordinator for more information.
