Job/Project Description
The Payroll/Employee Benefits Intern will work with staff in the Payroll/Employee Benefits Division of the Walworth County Finance Department on new software implementation. This includes:

  • Ensuring data in the system is accurate.
  • Assisting in testing of the application.
  • Assisting Employee Benefits staff with conversion of employee files.

The intern will also complete other projects as assigned.

This SPRING SEMESTER internship is a PART-TIME position at approximately 20 HOURS/WEEK. The internship is PAID at $14.00/HOUR. This internship has an approximate START DATE of JANUARY 12, 2009 and an END DATE of MAY 31, 2009. The possibility exists for this internship to be extended beyond the spring semester.

Qualifications

  • Microsoft Excel experience.
  • General computer knowledge.
  • Financial skills are a plus, but not required.
  • 2.5 minimum cumulative GPA (Hawk Internship Program Requirement).

MANDATORY HIP Career Development Activities
The Hawk Internship Program (HIP) includes the MANDATORY completion of a series of career development activities designed to help interns get the most out of their internship experiences. The student hired for this HIP opportunity (a "Hawk Intern") must complete the following activities:

  • Meet with Internship Coordinator Laura Jacobs (Career & Leadership Development) BEFORE beginning work at the internship site. Expectations will be reviewed, and you will be expected to sign an agreement indicating that you understand and will abide by those expectations.
  • Complete a Statement of Intent, a one to two page paper discussing your interest in and goals for the internship. You will also write up a Learning Contract with your site supervisor.
  • Midway through the internship, the Internship Coordinator will conduct a Progress Review, checking in with you and your supervisor.
  • Complete a Reflective Summary, a two page paper reflecting on your internship experience.
  • Complete an Evaluation of the employer.

Hawk Interns who complete all of these activities will not only have a true internship experience, but they will also receive a certificate of internship completion from the university.

This is a not-for-credit experience. Hawk Interns who wish to seek academic credit for their HIP internship must speak with the faculty internship coordinator for their major. In order to earn academic credit, you may need to meet certain academic or other prerequisites (ex. higher GPA, previous coursework). About the Walworth County Finance Department
It is the mission of the Walworth County Finance Department to actively administer the financial affairs of the County, ensure the integrity of financial information, and provide quality financial services consistent with the responsibilities outlined in the State statutes and County codes.

The divisions of the Finance Department include Financial Reporting, Budget, and Payroll & Employee Benefits. The primary responsibilities of the payroll/employee benefits division are to ensure accurate and timely distribution of county payroll and administer employee benefits programs. Functions of the payroll/employee benefits division include: payroll, benefits orientation, Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), deferred compensation, donor program, employee assistance program, employee ID cards, employee information (changes & updates), income verification, insurance (dental, health, life, retiree), long term disability (LTD), over age dependents, Section 125 (flex benefits), and Wisconsin Retirement System.
