Hawk Internship Program (HIP) – Students
The UW-Whitewater Hawk Internship Program (HIP), coordinated by Career & Leadership Development, provides career development internship opportunities in the Walworth, Rock, and Jefferson County area for the university’s undergraduate students. The program is open to students from all majors.

Benefits of Being a Hawk Intern
Students involved with the Hawk Internship Program connect with internship opportunities that are in close proximity to Whitewater. The program works with local employer partners to establish more quality career development experiences for UW-Whitewater students. A Hawk Intern can make professional contacts in the immediate region, potentially connect with future employment opportunities in the immediate region, and generally make him/herself more marketable for the future post-grad job search.

- Hawk Interns participate in a Career Development Education program. The related activities are designed to help you make the most of the internship opportunity and get the maximum benefit from the experience. It also provides you with support from the Internship Coordinator who can help you with job search preparation from resume reviews to practice interviews.
- Hawk Interns also have the option of seeking academic credit for the internship, if they so choose.

- It is strongly recommended that you prepare thoroughly for your application and potential interview. Meet with a Career Counselor to have your resume reviewed and/or to participate in a “mock” (practice) interview. You can schedule an appointment by calling Career & Leadership Development at (262) 472-1471 or stopping by the office in the University Center, Room 146.
- The hiring process will be handled solely by the employer offering the internship opportunity. The employer will notify the Internship Coordinator of the hire.
- The hired Hawk Intern will meet with the Internship Coordinator before beginning work. Expectations will be covered as well as the Career Development requirements.

Career Development Requirements
The Hawk Internship Program includes the MANDATORY completion of a series of career development activities designed to help Hawk Interns get the most out of their internship experiences. Each Hawk Intern must complete the following activities:
- Meet with the Internship Coordinator Laura Jacobs (Career & Leadership Development) BEFORE beginning work at the internship site. Expectations will be reviewed, strategies for internship success will be discussed, and internship-related questions will be addressed.
- Write a Statement of Intent, a one to two page paper discussing your interest in and goals for the internship. Develop a Learning Contract with your site supervisor.
- Midway through the internship, the Internship Coordinator will conduct a Progress Review, checking in with both the intern and site supervisor.
- At the end of the internship, write a Reflective Summary, a two page paper reflecting on the internship experience.
- Complete a final evaluation of the employer.
Hawk Interns who complete all of these activities will not only have a true internship experience, but they will also receive a certificate of internship completion from the university.
These activities, in and of themselves, are not for credit.
Earning Academic Credit
Students who wish to seek academic credit for their participation in a Hawk Internship Program internship are encouraged to speak with the faculty internship coordinator in their major field of study. In order for a student to earn academic credit for an internship, he/she may need to meet certain academic prerequisites.
In general, you must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 to qualify for Hawk Internship Program internships. Please be aware that an employer may choose to require a higher GPA in order to qualify for their individual position. In addition, a higher GPA may be required in order to earn academic credit for the internship.
