Warhawks Win!! 62 to 28
What a difference a year makes. Last season, UW-Platteville stunned unbeaten Whitewater 7-6 at Ralph E. Davis-Pioneer Stadium in Platteville. That was not the case Saturday afternoon on the Warhawks home turf. Whitewater scored touchdowns on its first five possessions on the way to a 63-28 win over the Pioneers in the 13th annual George Chryst Bowl. Following the game, UWW captains Jim Leszczynski and Collin Price were presented by Chryst's widow, Patty, the George H. Chryst Memorial Trophy, a miners pick patterned after the Paul Bunyon Axe that goes to the annual winner of the Wisconsin - Minnesota game.
The Warhawks offense ended the game with a school-record 706 yards of total offense, 459 via the pass, and 247 on the ground.
Justin Jacobs threw for 287 yards and 2 touchdowns. The junior from Sun Praire left the game late in the first have with a shoulder injury and did not return. The injury is not believed to be serious. Backup QB, Mike Askren, finished the game a solid 8 for 11 through the air, including a 45 yard scoring strike to Leszczynski. Leszczynski was named Whitewater's offensive player of the game after catching 12 passes for 201 yards and 3 touchdowns. Lance Douglas also had a superlative game for the Hawks with 6 catches for 152 yards.
Brian Ryczkowski played part of the third quarter and the entire fourth quarter for the Warhawks, finishing 2 for-4 though the air for 49 yards. In all, Whitewater's quarterbacks were 25 for 40 for 459 yards, 3 touchdowns and just 1 interception.
Justin Beaver was held to 123 yards on 24 carries following three-consecutive career-high performances. The nation's second-leading rusher did manage to score 3 touchdowns. Andy Lange carried just 3 times as Beaver's backup. The freshman made the most of it, gaining 69 yards and a touchdown. Travis Reuland and Darius McCurdy also "pounded the rock to paydirt" for the Hawks.
Defensively, Kyle Johnson and Matt Blaziewske led the way with 8 tackles each. Johnson was named the Warhawk defensive MVP for his six solo tackles, including a couple of thunderous hits in the secondary. Robb Widuch and Andy Murray each recorded interceptions for the Hawks.
Whitewater remains perfect at 7-0! Congratulations Warhawks!
