Battle of the Bands XIV

1. Completed application and demo must be submitted to the Career & Leadership Development's front desk, by 5:00 PM Friday February 10, 2012.

2. Each band must submit a high-quality CD with their application. A committee made up of SEAL Executives and Staff Members will screen approximately 6-10 minutes of each entry and anonymously select six bands to perform at the 14th annual Battle of the Bands in the UC-Hamilton Room on Friday, March 9, 2012 at 7:00 PM.

Contest Rules

1. If chosen as a finalist, your band will compete at UW-Whitewater in the Battle of the Bands XIV on Friday, March 9, 2012.

2. Each band will be allowed 35 minutes total for set up, performance and tear down. (For example: 5 minutes set up, 25 minute performance, and 5 minutes tear down.) Set up and tear down time will overlap with the bands preceding and following your own for less down time.

*Each band will be responsible for keeping track of their own time. Judges will also be keeping track for their own records. Points will be deducted for playing over the time limit. (Violation 3 points/1 minute.)

3. Each finalist will be allowed 20 minutes for sound check on Friday, March 9, 2012. You will be notified of your sound check in advance. Sound check times are based upon reverse show order for technical efficiency. Failure to show up for your sound check will result in forfeiture of ANY sound check.

4. A pre-event meeting for all bands will occur at 6:30 p.m. All band members must be in attendance at this meeting.

5. Any band member who appears to be under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or any other controlled substance will result in band disqualification. In addition, the person in question will be asked to leave the premises for the remainder of the competition.

6. Absolutely NO obscene or offensive lyrics will be allowed. Also, indecent or obscene body gestures will NOT be permitted. Any actions or lyrics determined to be indecent or obscene by the judges will result in the disqualification of the entry.

7. UW-Whitewater has banned "moshing" or similar behaviors at events. Any attempt by the artist to encourage those types of behaviors will result from forfeiture of artist fee. Event attendees are not allowed on stage at any time.

Technical Information

  1. The following backline gear is provided by SEAL. No replacements of equipment will be allowed.
    1. 2 guitar amps and speakers of professional quality
    2. 1 bass guitar amp and speaker of professional quality
    3. 2 direct (D.I.) boxes
    4. 6 vocal mics
    5. 1 monitor mix with 4 wedge monitors
    6. 15-piece drum set and high hat stand

      *Drummer must provide their own sticks, cymbals, cymbal stands, bass drum pedal, and additional stands and high hat clutch.
      *Drummer may bring their own Snare and Snare Stand.

  1. Participants must use provided drum kit and any of the above equipment as needed. The participants must provide any additional equipment. The equipment must be able to plug into the provided sound systems. NO exceptions will be made.
  2. Participants may bring and use their own individual effect pedals.
  3. UW-Whitewater and SEAL are not responsible for damage or theft of personal property.
  4. Abuse or theft of the provided equipment will result in immediate disqualification and required reparation to the equipment provider.
  5. SEAL will provide an audio technician, who will mix all bands.

Judging

  1. Each act will be judged on the following criteria:
    1. Content- Appearance, appropriate material
    2. Time- use of time (35 minutes)
    3. Musical Ability- Vocal/ instrumental skill, intonation, fluidity, complexity of music
    4. Originality- quality original material and/or interpretation of cover tunes
    5. Crowd Response- audience applause, overall enthusiasm

    BY VOTING THE AUDIENCE WILL ALSO HELP DETERMINE THE WINNER

Audience

  1. All individuals attending Battle of the Bands must have a photo ID.
  2. $3 without student ID
  3. Student price is $1 (with UWW- ID)
  4. Bands will be provided 1 pass for the band's manager as long as his/her name and information is included on the application as well as an access pass for each band member.

Prizes

Prizes will be similar to those listed below:

  • First Prize: $500
  • Second Prize: $200
  • Third Prize: $100
