Faculty Survey of Student Engagement

UW-Whitewater and the FSSE

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater started participating in the FSSE in 2003. The FSSE collects information from lower and upper division faculty about their perceptions of the characteristics and quality of the undergraduate experience. FSSE measures faculty members' expectations of student engagement in educational practices that that have been empirically linked with high levels of learning and development.  FSSE data are used by faculty, administrators, researchers, and others for institutional improvement, public reporting, and related purposes.

The Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE) is administered by the Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research. FSSE was designed to complement the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), which is administered to undergraduate students. FSSE measures the expectations of instructional staff (faculty, instructors, and/or graduate students who teach) for student engagement in educational practices that are empirically linked with student learning and development. FSSE focuses on:

  • Instructional staff perceptions of how often students engage in different activities.
  • The importance instructional staff place on various areas of learning and development.
  • The nature and frequency of instructional staff-student interactions.
  • How instructional staff organize their time, both in and out of the classroom.

Frequencies and Statistical Comparisons

The FSSE Frequencies report detail how many and what percent of respondents chose each response option for all items, item numbers, variable names, and class level of respondents. The report is based on information from all faculty who responded to the survey based on their experiences teaching either a lower- or upper-division course.
