HERI Faculty Survey

Developed and administered by the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) out of the University of California – Los Angeles (UCLA), the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) Faculty Survey has been designed to provide institutions with information pertaining to the faculty experience. According to the HERI website: “[The survey] includes topics such as pedagogical practices, faculty goals and expectations for students, research and service activities, sources of stress and satisfaction, and the connection between learning in the classroom and practices in the local and global community.”

Universities that choose to participate in this web-based survey, which is administered every three years, pay a survey administration fee. HERI provides participants with comprehensive information about the faculty experience at participating institutions. This information can be used to identify and address issues that may contribute to student success.

UW-Whitewater faculty participated in the HERI Faculty Survey in Spring 2017. Results are available here.

The Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE) is administered by the Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research. FSSE was designed to complement the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), which is administered to undergraduate students. FSSE measures the expectations of instructional staff (faculty, instructors, and/or graduate students who teach) for student engagement in educational practices that are empirically linked with student learning and development. FSSE focuses on:

  • Instructional staff perceptions of how often students engage in different activities.
  • The importance instructional staff place on various areas of learning and development.
  • The nature and frequency of instructional staff-student interactions.
  • How instructional staff organize their time, both in and out of the classroom.

Snapshot reports provide a concise collection of key findings about student engagement at an institutional level for each year available.

Frequencies and Statistical Comparisons

The FSSE Frequencies report detail how many and what percent of respondents chose each response option for all items, item numbers, variable names, and class level of respondents. The report is based on information from all faculty who responded to the survey based on their experiences teaching either a lower- or upper-division course.
