ELS Class Summary

Part 1 - Challenge the Process

The first of the fundamental practices, participants will discover that leadership is about thinking outside the box, having the courage needed to challenge group process, and realize that thoughtfulness is required in order to effectively challenge the process. Participants gain an understanding of the difference between leading, managing, coaching, and mentoring.

Part 2 - Inspire a Shared Vision

Participants will gain an understanding of vision, how leaders can collaborate with others to develop a vision, and how leaders can articulate that vision in a way that inspires others to act. Participants gain an understanding of how leaders enlist the support of others.

Part 3 - Enabling Others to Act

Building trust is an important function of leadership. In this session participants will learn how leaders build trust and foster collaboration within their group. Participants will gain an awareness of the importance of emphasizing human dignity and trust among our communities and organizations.

Part 4 - Modeling the Way

Leaders need to walk their talk - they need to understand credibility in human relationships. This session will focus on understanding one's values and sense of purpose in life. Participants begin to clarify values important to one's sense of purpose and life goals. They also should see connections between what they think and how they act, and to understand credibility in human relationships.

Part 5 - Encouraging the Heart

Genuine recognition of the contributions of members is important to the health and well-being of the group. This session will give examples of ways in which leaders can recognize and celebrate the contributions of the group. Participants should come away with an understanding of the social competencies necessary in leadership. These include: capacity for intimacy, having fun and enjoying life and work, and motivating self and others.
