“Cesar Chavez as an International Leader” will be the focus of this year’s annual Cesar Chavez Celebration sponsored by Latino Student Programs (LSP) and Latinos Unidos (LU) on Thursday, March 21, at 4:30 p.m.
Margaret Murphy, former clinic administrator and organizer for United Farm Workers of America, will discuss various issues dealing with the Latino community and America. Entertainment will be provided by the dance group “Admira la Música de las Américas,” Luis Cuauhtemoc Montoya and Jorge Mayorga. There also will be a tribute to 1971 Chilean Nobel Prize winning author Pablo Neruda.
Each year LSP and LU host this event to acknowledge the accomplishments and contributions of Cesar Chavez. Chavez, a Mexican migrant worker fought for better working conditions, wages and rights of migrant workers. He founded the United Farm Workers of America, which was charted by the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations in 1966. In 1968, Chavez gained national attention by boycotting Californian grapes to achieve labor contracts.
Chavez’s teachings of non-violence, justice and equality have become an inspiration to the Latino community and American society.
