Safety students get a hands-on lesson in crane safety

Released: April 15, 2002

University of Wisconsin-Whitewater students in two of Wayne Cole’s safety classes will be getting a hands-on experience about cranes and safety regulations on Tuesday, April 16 at 4 p.m. and Wednesday, April 17 at 2:15 p.m. by the university’s baseball diamond on Schwager Drive.

Cole, a professor of occupational and environmental safety and health, in conjunction with the support of CR Meyer and Zurich North America corporations, is having a truck-mounted hydraulic crane brought to campus.

“Reading material and viewing a video does not provide the same level of understanding as hands-on experience,” Cole said. “The students will be able to work with a real crane and get a personal learning experience with an experienced crane operator.”

The students will go over the main parts of the machine and its function. They will also gain better understanding of proper usage and safety issues.

Cole decided to have a hands-on safety lesson after the collapse of Big Blue at Miller Park.

“As demonstrated at Miller Park, these tragic incidents affect real people…Safety professionals trained at UW-Whitewater will be the next generation to lead the reduction of injury to workers.”
